More tsunami systems OK for six Andaman provinces

BANGKOK, Sept 19 (TNA) – Thailand's Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont agreed to install additional tsunami warning systems in all Andaman coastal provinces, well-known holiday destinations for both Thai and foreign tourists, Smith Tumsaroch, director of Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) said Wednesday.

The NDWC director said that after meeting with the prime minister on development plans for six Andaman coastal provinces including Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Satun, and Trang, the premier encouraged the installation of additional tsunami warning towers in all Andaman coastal areas and building shelters for people who could not move to the higher ground in time.

Mr. Smith added that the premier's suggestions could be immediately applied as there is a special budget reserved for urgent matters. Both issues would be raised in next week's Cabinet meeting.

Construction of new harbours serving as tidal wave embankments will also be considered in the same session. Likewise, docked boats are required to face the sea to enable their easy departure if a tsunami hits. (TNA)-E110
