Residents of 7 southern provinces warned of flash floods

The Meteorological Department warned Monday that the influence of a tropical storm in the South China Sea would cause heavy rains in seven southern provinces this week.

The department issued the warning at 5 am that the tropical storm "Lekima" in the middle South China Sea was centered about 550 km east of Dahnang, Vietnam or Lat 14.7 oN, Long 113.0 oE with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/hr. The storm is moving westward at a speed of 12 km/hr.

It said the storm's influence has intensified the southwestern monsoon over the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand, causing heavy rains to fall in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Surat Thani. It said residents of the provinces should also brace themselves for possible flash floods.

Small fishing boats were advised not to leave the shore from Monday to Thursday.
