I reinstalled XP a few days back and the latest in my problems is Windows Media Player

which will not play any DVD saying,,,

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

Trouble shooting this in Help and Support is frustrating to say the least,

So I download Media Player Classic and get a message saying "Audio Switcher Off" and suggest I go looking for the appropriate codecs. I can find plenty of codecs but, its all meaningless to me.

what should I do to solve this problem ??

Right-click My Computer --> Properties --> Hardware --> Device Manager, look in the list and see if anything has an exclamation/question mark. This looks like your sound card drivers have not been installed. Try going to Windows Update, it might have the drivers.
