Car Insurance: 3rd Class Only Covering Max. 1 Mill

I bought a second hand Volkswagen, now registered in my thai friends name. As the value of the car is just 200.000 baht, an insurance to cover third party damages would be enough... so I was looking for 3rd class insurances.

What I found was a 3rd class insurance that covers only 1 million of third party damages.

By europeen standards that is by far not enough for me, when I imagine crashing into a new Ferrari one day....

So my question: Is it possible to get a 3rd class insurance with unlimited coverage or at least maybe 5 million baht? Which insurance company is recommended?

The option of getting a 1st class insurance seems to be impossible because of the age of the car (1997).

Yes, I got a bit of a surprise when I found out the 3rd Class normally only covers the other car up to 1,000,000 baht. So an unfortunate incident results in you paying up, going to jail or leaving the country quick!

We eventually managed to get this increased to 2,500,000 baht. By buying extra cover. Think we used Thaivivat Insurance.

Ten years old is the limit for 1st class insurance.

A work of warning if you ‘gas’ the car you need to tell the insurance company and get an additional test carried out. Not all insurance companies will insure a ‘gassed’ car.

Not a problem BUT please check out the insurance company and their service.  For example if you use a reputable company such as AXA you will have 24hr English speaking help - not always the case with the smaller Thai companies.

5m baht third party is not a problem - please fill in the application form on the Thai Visa Insurance site
