I can't get my Azureus prog. to download anything through any open ports. It says use ports between 50000 & 60000 but when I test my PC (Win XP s.2 Firefox), none of the ports appear to be open., except the ones in everyday use.

As I'm going through a wireless conection, it seems to me I get a different IP address (last digits only) every time I log on. I want to be able to forward that Ip address through to the torrent source to make a download, through the router, which I assume is the other end of my wireless conection. I have that IP address (of the router). I believe this is the reason these ports won't respond.

I know I'm doing something wrong, or mis understand all this jargon that these guys at Azureus think everybody knows.

I have phoned Samart who run the service, only to get a guy who didn't know what a port was on the line, and have sent them an e mail yesterday, as it's a 24hr service, but as yet no response.

Can anyone tell me in simple layman terms that a simpleton can understand what the hel_l to do? If not, is there a fool proof automated torrent client out there somewhere, or another way without uising a client to download a torrent?

I'd be very grateful for any help, as I've been doing my brian damage over this for the last 2 days and I'm at the end of my tether! (Rant Over).

Thanks in advance

Go to the DHCP server properties at your Router setup. Here you should limit the range of IP addresses used by DHCP. Choose an address range of lets say 192.168.1.33 to 192.168.1.64 for instance. (Note: You must use your IP range here! see example below!)

Next, enter your Network properties setup, and uncheck the automatic IP address retrieval. Instead, use a fixed IP address which is not included in the DHCp range you have just set.

An example:

Your routers IP: 192.168.1.1

Your DHCP IP range: 192.168.1.33 to .64

You now choose 192.168.1.2 as your fixed IP address. The DNS server should be 192.168.1.1, and the network mask 255.255.255.0

Gateway is your router 192.168.1.1

Go to the router setup again, and find the menu that deals with Port Forwarding.

Here you enter the range you specified in Azureus (by the way, limit the number of ports, 10000 Ports is crazy!)

Usually this is done in the following or similar way:

WAN Port (Start)

55555

This should be the first port in the range you enter at Azureus

WAN Port (End)

55600

This should be the last port in the range you specified in Azureus

LAN IP

192.168.1.2

Your PCs fixed IP

LAN Port (Start)

55555

Use the same as above

LAN Port (End)

55600

Use the same as above

TCP/UDP/BOTH

use BOTH, or check your Azureus Doumentation.

You should also check the Routers Firewall, and make sure these ports are not blocked!

Also your PCs Firewall, here you have to allow incoming connections on these Ports.

Hope that helps. Sorry, cant be more specific as I don't know your Routers Model.

if it is not your router , you will not be able to enable forwarding of any ports

get utorrent and tick the box for uPnP - uPnP is probably enabled by default in the router and should allow your torrent client to peer.

I use BitTorrent. My router is Asus 6000EV

I've already set up a static IP. My problem is about which ports to open.

If I want to DL 3 torrents at the same time do I have to open 3 ports ? If yes, how do I do that in the NAT page (virtual server) ?

Rule Application Start Port End Port Local IP Address

1 -Torrent1 6881 6883 192.168.*.***

Or

Rule Application Start Port End Port Local IP Address

1 -Torrent1 6881 6881 192.168.*.***

Rule Application Start Port End Port Local IP Address

2 -Torrent2 6882 6882 192.168.*.***

Rule Application Start Port End Port Local IP Address

1 -Torrent1 6883 6883 192.168.*.***

BTW, my DL speed is incredibly slow (0-2 Kb). It might take weeks if not months to download a 500 MB file. Any advice on how to speed things up ?

Thanks

Use Utorrent, and then use the speed guide to set everything up! It includes a link to forwarding your ports. Best client I've use without a doubt, small footprint too!

Seconded. Just use a client that makes these things easy.

It's too much to set up manually, even if you have control over your router.

I used Bit Torrent at first, but was then advised to use Azureus from Sourceforge. It's much better, and after messing around and screwing things up, I went back to default, and everythings fine. Downloads are pretty fast too. By the way, I'm using Btjunkie as the torrent search engine, which is really good too...the best I've come across so far. You have to have Java installed, and this is also available from Sourceforge.

Once you download Azureus, you should have no further problems. Don't forget the Internet here is not great, so there's a lot of fluctuation in the Download speeds. Azureus will find it's way thru your router.

Hope this helps a bit

Happy Downloading.
