Copperfield's show in Bangkok likely to be cancelled

David Copperfield's "World of Wonder" show in Bangkok in November next month is likely to be cancelled following FBI's investigation on sexual misconduct accuasations by an unidentified woman on him.

His shows in Malaysia has already been cancelled but the organiser in Thailand, RS, has not yet announced the cancellation of his Bangkok tour.

The Kuala Lumpur-based Star quoted Arianna Event Management director Arianna Teoh as saying the cancellation was due to the investigation by the FBI on the master illusionist.

"He needs to help in the investigations. Copperfield is not prevented from leaving the United States but he needs time to get to the bottom of things," Teoh said.

She said to be fair to all Copperfield fans, the management decided to cancel the shows here and would give him a week's grace after the conclusion of the investigations.

The FBI raided Copperfield's warehouse and a theatre where he performs in Las Vegas following sexual misconduct accusations by an unidentified woman.

The agency would not disclose the nature of its investigation, saying only that federal agents had raided the warehouse as part of a criminal probe based in Seattle.

Published reports said the woman had accused the popular illusionist of sexual misconduct while both were in the Bahamas, and that agents had seized some US$2mil (RM6.7mil) and computer equipment.

Copperfield, 51, uses the warehouse as an office, for rehearsals and to store memorabilia and props and keeps an apartment on the second floor.

Meanwhile US media reported that David Chesnoff, Copperfield's lawyer rebutted an allegation that Copperfield "forced himself" on a woman.

"An unidentified woman has made serious allegations against David Copperfield," lawyer Chesnoff said Friday in a statement.

"It is important these allegations be put into perspective," Chesnoff said. "Although authorities have not revealed her identity to us, we know these allegations are false because David Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone."

Neither Chesnoff nor law enforcement officials would provide details about the allegation or the warehouse search.

Seattle FBI agent Robbie Burroughs said Thursday that the Las Vegas investigation was part of a Seattle case.

"The Seattle case is pending and that means we can't say anything about it," Burroughs said.

FBI agents on Wednesday searched the Hollywood Theater at the MGM Grand casino-hotel, where Copperfield regularly performs, casino spokeswoman Yvette Monet told The Associated Press.

Agents also conducted "investigative activity" at a warehouse where Copperfield stores tricks and memorabilia, dubbed the International Museum & Library of Conjuring Arts, FBI agent David Staretz said.

Copperfield, 51, has been a longtime performer at the MGM Grand, where he has performed in six- to eight-week stints several times a year, Monet said.

Sex suspect Copperfield calls off Bangkok tour

(BangkokPost.com) - World renowned illusionist David Copperfield may be able to fool his audiences on stage but off it, no disappearing act can save him from the hands of justice.

Copperfield, who had planned to visit Bangkok for a tour in November, was forced to cancel the show after reports emerged that he is currently embroiled in a sexual harassment case.

According to FBI police, Copperfield was accused of raping a female victim from Seattle back in July. Investigators say the victim left it until now to file charges because she had been outside of the United States all this while.

Last week, investigators conducted a search on Copperfield's trailer in Las Vegas and seized data from his digital camera and computer hard drive. An investigation is still pending.

His lawyer has come out to defend Mr Copperfield saying “Mr Copperfield has always acted in an appropriate manner and all this is simply ridiculous.”

Local organisers of Copperfield’s “World of Wonder” show plan to make an announcement to let those who bought tickets to the November show in Bangkok that tickets will be reimbursed

If the guy is innocent, it's really scary how your life can be turned upside down with one false accusation.

Best to always keep company with people of highest character, as far as you can possibly know about them. Even then, there's always that possibility the table can flip on you.

It also helps to be poor. Just ask me. :o

If he can make the Statue Of Liberty and a Boeing 747 disappear, surely a couple of piffling sexual misconduct charges shouldn't be a problem..? Pfffffffft. Puff of smoke....*rimshot*........ Gone!

He could always just saw his accusers in half, I suppose.

I remember when two woman tried to blackmail Jerry Springer on a similar case. If you are rich, start videotaping everything you do!

That's what Pamela Anderson and Paris Hillton did and it caused them more trouble, good entertainment though.

Paris Hilton got more famous for it.

And as all kids know, that is all that matters.

Is it only me or do you also think that it is totally unfair that without charge he is named and the woman accusing is allowed to remain anonymous, ?

Looks like David found himself a gold digger. David Copperfield is a very attractive man and I imagine there is a very long list of women wanting to spend time with him. This should turn out well but it is just the initial bull he must endure.

The latest gold digger that comes to mind was with Michael Jackson, that turned out in favor of MJ.

I'm pretty sure that Copperfield wouldn't feel very comfortable being compared to Michael Jackson. :o

It would shock me beyond reason if there was even the slightest viability to this claim. Having the FBI involved though is very very serious, they would not be involved in a simple rape case and would be extremely reluctant to conduct such a large raid against such a prominent figure unless the evidence was very strong.

He is one of the highest earning performers in the entertainment industry. His earnings dwarf about every celebrity except Oprah. With his unusual lifestyle, he is a prime target. The good news is that David is almost never alone, constantly surrounded by staff, entourage and security 24/7.

He is a gentle-man and very considerate. I for one hope the allegations prove unfounded.

Unfortunately such allegations can be made against any man, causing all kinds of problems. Also when such charges turn out not to be true, there never seems to be any jail time for the people who brought these charges forth. I would imagine all kinds of evidence should be available, defensive wounds, sperm, wounds on the person committing the assault,etc..

You would think this guy should have no problem getting laid. Maybe they have to come out with a standard contracts people can keep can keep around the place, so they can get laid safely. Either way any man will be guilty until he proves himself to be innocent, as things stand today.

I am in no way condoning any form of rape, but my wife is only 5ft 2 in. tall, but I think she could put up one hel_l of a fight in any altercation, and I don't care how big someone is, they would have teeth marks, scratches, bruises, if not missing an eye or two.

A rich Thai in Thailand in this situation would certainly be condemned by fellow TV members. Whilst a rich farang in farangland makes him the victim automatically. I guess thais are really bad people and farangs never rape.

Do people ever wonder why rape victims are very often reluctant to report the crime? Yes because of people like that.

I think you are taking things the wrong way. In no way do I believe people condone rape. But since you brought up a different scenario. First of all a rich Thai, in Thailand, would to the best of my knowledge, never be convicted of rape and go to prison. If you have some examples of otherwise, please let me know. While Farangs, rich or poor, are readily imprisoned for such an offense. Also it's a common scam in Farangland these days. Even a former president was put in a very bad position, where a woman kept a dress( I believe) with his sperm, kept it in her freezer for later use against him, even though rape was not the issue, if I recall properly. But used against him nonetheless. That also would never happen in the LOS. Seeing many similar scenarios such as this makes one a sceptic. Physical proof seems more reliable. I presume if some guy tried to rape you, there would be physical evidence. Like you trying to defend yourself by trying to beat the shit out of him and vice versa. Plus further physical evidence should he succeed.

I know I would fight like hel_l, as any other normal person would. So if there is no physical evidence, and none was given in the article, I tend not to easily believe it.

It's ridiculous the accuser can remain anonymous; from the press: fine. But from the accused himself? Seriously, something is broken in the US judicial system, and not in one place.

Agreed.

Rape victims should have their naked bodies on newspapers frontpage. Or even better are close ups to their organs so we readers could judge if they have actually been raped.

Sanpatong suggested nothing of the sort, either your command of the English language is very poor or you are just stupid.

He will find the name of the accuser soon enough, and with a court order to keep it confidential as it should be. This may not even be a rape case, to have the FBI involved portends other charges. The FBI does not investigate or prosecute rapes, thats not a federal offense.

Whatever the case, the accuser has the right to privacy, its bad enough on the stand with a hostile lawyer in front of a jury, no need to try her in the press even if it is a fraudulent claim. Unfortunately you have to protect the gold diggers in order to protect the truly damaged, its just the way it is.

Grand jury investigates Copperfield allegations

Saturday, October 27, 2007 - Page updated at 01:04 AM

A Seattle federal grand jury is investigating allegations by an aspiring model from Washington who said she was raped, assaulted and threatened by magician David Copperfield at his private island in the Bahamas in July, at least three federal law-enforcement officials have confirmed.

The Washington woman has told law enforcement that she and her family were approached at a Jan. 25 performance in the Tri-Cities area by a member of Copperfield's entourage almost as soon as they entered the auditorium. They were led to special seats, and Copperfield selected the woman to come on stage as part of his act, the federal sources said.

Sources confirmed that the woman told investigators Copperfield later promised he could help with her modeling career and invited her to his isolated $50 million private retreat at Musha Cay, in a tiny string of white-sand islands 85 miles southeast of Nassau, Bahamas.

Musha Cay

She told investigators Copperfield assured her that there would be other guests at the 150-acre resort, which is restricted to a maximum of 24 guests and rents for up to $50,000 a night. From Nassau, the retreat is accessible only by charter plane and then private boat.

When the woman, 21, made the trip in late July -- after exchanging e-mails with Copperfield, 51 -- she found herself the only guest on the island with him, she told investigators. She has told Seattle police, and later the FBI, that Copperfield raped and struck her during her two days on the island, said sources familiar with her allegations.

She said that, afterward, Copperfield threatened her, telling her she'd better keep quiet, and then escorted her onto a plane, sources said.

Copperfield's attorney, David Chesnoff of Las Vegas, reiterated Friday that "Copperfield has never forced himself on anyone."

After leaving Nassau, the woman flew to Florida and then Seattle, where she told her family what happened and went to the Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress, sources said. A rape kit was assembled, and a federal source has confirmed that some of her clothing was taken into evidence.

The woman also reported the matter to Seattle police, who said a report was taken but will not release it. Federal sources and others said the woman was told that the department had no jurisdiction to investigate a crime that occurred in another country, and that the department took no other action.

The woman then went to the U.S. Attorney's Office, which asked the FBI to investigate. The woman and her family live in Washington and, because her trip began and ended in the U.S. -- even though the alleged crime occurred elsewhere -- federal agents have claimed jurisdiction in the case.

Emily Langlie, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, said the office would not comment. Two of the office's top prosecutors have been assigned to oversee the investigation and evidence is being presented to a grand jury, according to law-enforcement sources. No indictment or criminal charges have been filed.

Chesnoff, Copperfield's attorney, said Friday he could not comment on the allegations.

"We have said we are going to honor the confidentiality of the investigation," he said, adding that he was disappointed that some in law enforcement have chosen not to do the same. "Apparently [they] don't have the same respect for the law, and it casts doubt on the integrity of this investigation."

The Seattle office of the FBI, which is heading the investigation, raided Copperfield's property warehouse and magic museum in Las Vegas last week. The search warrant remains sealed.

From Google Earth:

"Musha Cay, Copperfield Bay, Bahamas - World famous illusionists' David Copperfield owns this and the 3 other adjoining islands just south - purchased for over $65,000,000, you can rent the island with up to 24 friends at a time for $325,000 a week. Heaven on earth for certain. "
