Has Tt&t (maxnet) Put The Squeeze On Bittorrent Users?

Has TT&T (MaxNet) put the squeeze on BitTorrent users?

I am in Chiang Mai and my service ISP is TT&T (MaxNet). One week ago my Torrent downloads and uploads died down to a slow trickle.

I know that my Azureus bitclient settings are correct, router ports are set and open, and settings have not changed.

A friend also reports the same slow down with Torrent usage.

Visited many quick fix advisory websites, encryption, compared my Azureus settings with those of my friend and all the rest of it, nothing works.

Is anyone else out there experiencing similar problems with their P2P protocol?

Any advice please how to get around this problem? Or is this the end of the road for us Torrent users?

Yes I would say that TT&T is definitely doing something with the international access and bitttorrents in particular. I am experiencing the same things over here in Ubon Ratchathani. I go to bookmarks to access webpages and it instead goes to a search for that website in Google. Occasionally I get great speeds on torrents like this morning. I was dling a tv show at the usual 0.2 kbps and I decided to just hide the window and see if it picked up speed. A very short time later the 350 MB file was finished. Only possible explanation is it found the file on a machine in Thailand.

Same here in Pattaya for 1 or 2 weeks. Terribly slow and I notice also a higher latency for international web pages.

Double speed, for the same monthly fee, seems to be kind of a rip off.....

Yes, its a fact that they are limiting Torrents and VOIP traffic at certain times of the day. I get amazing through put at night some nights after 11pm to about 7am. But other times its much worse than it used to be for anything, not just torrents. Any video, anything with some speed requirement is just not possible. There are some new providers coming to my area, and I will be trying other options as soon as they are available.

Hi.

Exactly same here (TRUE, Bangkok). Just got "super highspeed" this weekend and it should be 1.5m/512k, instead i get speed test results from 150/20 to 400/250. Torrents are trickling in at snail's pace, pop-G-Mail access times out, some web sites take a very long time to load.

The internet itself is a very sad joke right now here in Thailand.

Your download speed depends on how many seeds and peers are online. This can vary by the minute.

I'm not experiencing any difference and I'm downloading torrents 24 hours a day.

maxnet has always been capping the bandwith for torrent and voip fod indy packages, however the speed is always the same as before, atm on indy 3 meg, i got 200ko/sec and i 'm doing some http download.

Hi

I have not experienced any slowdown here on Samui, running with premier package.

cheers.

I'm in central Thailand and now can't download torrents at all..........period.........nothing.........even during the late evening hours. They are obviously blocking something.............I am beginning to really hate this country and its stupid policies.

So go back to the west where you can download your stuff on torrents, but get arrested, imprisoned and fined for doing so :)

A good question too all that are having problems vs. those that aren't with TT&T is are you on Indy or Premier? I believe I have read that TT&t does some throttling with Indy, but not with Premier. Defiantly there is more international bandwidth with premier.

So they are deliberately forcing users to pay for a more expensive service by manipulating the system. That sucks!

And how long more it will take before this will happen here also?

I am afraid that thought escaped Wolfie.........probably a member of the LOVE THAILAND OR LEAVE IT CROWD. It is a bit scary................Thailand seems to be moving closer to the China model, but at least there you can still download torrents.

Well if you take that approach then we are all doomed - might as well give up now, eh?

Hardly mate, you are the one bitching about begining to hate the country - im just saying if you hate it that much, do something about it...

I guess that makes you a member of the I HATE IT BUT WOULD RATHER BITCH ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF CHANGE IT CROWD. It is a bit scary................... Thailand seems to attract such creatures, but at least it gives them something to moan about :)

That productive post aside, does any person have an answer to the question: What is actually going on with the internet now?

I can't download any torrents at all.........and many sites (no, not porn) are down.

Is this triple T policy?

Is it govt. policy?

Has another earthquake damaged cables?

I have had no problems at all with downloads over the last week or so, full speed, got a massive amount downloaded - quite impressed with my new True connection

Have you tried rebooting everything? PC and Router etc? (I know that is a bit 'IT Helpdesk' but it does fix a lot of problems :) ) Also check that your port is opened and forwarded correctly to the PC - this can make a difference!

Also, if your torrent doesnt have many seeders then you will get bad speeds - i would check that you have plenty of seeders and are actually connected to them, try one of the more popular torrents (any of the recent TV shows - for instance) to 'check' that you can download at a decent speed. It is also possible that your IP has been blacklisted by the seeders etc (altho probably unlikely) - Are you on a dedicated line or a shared internet connection? Also how old is your router/modem? ive had a couple cr@p out on me over the years - so if you have an old modem kicking around try swapping it out to see if it makes a difference - Lastly has anything changed on your set-up? did you do any 'tweaks' to connections etc?

I know that TT&T do limit the bandwidth however

Now that you mention it - the torrents ive had going for a while are kind of slow, but the stuff ive added recently is flying - all pirate bay stuff.

When i get home tonight i will try to update the tracker (download the .torrent file again) and see if that makes a difference!

OK........I am not a technical whiz kid by any means.......just turn on the computer and use it.

The torrent downloads seem to have always been slow. Several things may be happening:

1) No seeders.......trying to download the old Dallas TV series........figures, huh........I am looking at a few peers but zero seeders up and down the line.......so no seeders = no downloading.......right?

2) Most of what is being downloaded is coming from Pirate Bay (and they may be having some legal problems)

3) I do not think I have configured the ports correctly to facilitate downloading/uploading

4) Triple T might be deliberately slowing or stopping torrent downloading

1. Not strictly, since Seeders are those who have on their computer 100% of the torrent [they have completed the download and have left their connexion open for others] Peers are those who are in the process of downloading. However, all peers [as you may expect] are able to swap data between them, so often the bulk of 'your' torrent is sourced by peers not Seeders.

2. It appears that the tracker [in summary software which tells your computer where to connect to obtain data] has been off-line for about 2 weeks, which possibly ties in with the 'sale' of PB. In some cases people are adding other public trackers into their new torrents.

3. This is often a red herring here owing to the configurations you can't get to, but as suggested try a highly seeded torrent and see what happens. Remember, if you are lucky and you have a peer [or seeder] within Thailand you may get a very effective response, however if all peers are outside the Kingdom, speed may always be disappointing.

4. In some internet supply contacts in the minuscule print there's a point about not guaranteeing support for P2P. The reason for traffic shaping should be to ensure they all users get a reasonable amount of their bandwidth. Since P2P is realistically estimated to generate some 70% of all traffic there is a logic there. To clarify the last point, accessing a web page requires a set of simple connexions, a torrent can, and often does spawn a large number of connexions, nearly always running as a 'background' activity, thereby leading to the traffic issue.

Not really, they are just over-selling, same as just about every other Thai ISP. When enough people have run for the premier packages they will be oversold as well.

This is Thailand, service is not an issue which troubles many providers, be it materials or services. I left Buddy, TRUE was the same. I left TRUE, now it seems KSC are the same. They don't care of you stay or not either, in Thailand it is a privilege to have one of these thieving numpties sell you something, not the other way around. And then, when they go broke they wail about their 'chok mai dee' instead of their 'samong mai dee'.

Same as it ever was, but more. When the pressure is on, even the miniscule Thai integrity goes out of the window.

I live in Pattaya and I just downloaded the uTorrent client one week ago and down loaded Tudors, season 3, a 5 giga bite file in about 60 minutes. The next time I tried to download any files, the best I could do was 30 to 50 kbs. I tried using soft ware to "disguise" the torrent and for about 2 minutes my speeds were back up to one mbs, then cut back to the 20-40 range. I live in an apartment and can not port forward to the router. Maybe I'm being throttled by True or maybe not.

I just leave my lap top on 24/7 until I finally get the file :)

what isp and package are using to achieve these speeds.
