This one comes up every few weeks by some aspiring (usually UK based) contractor who has recently fallen in love with Thailand or one of its population, try a search on the site for all the details. In a nutshell:

Thailand has loads of highly skilled IT staff who will work for a fraction of the NI you pay back in the West.

Contracts or full time employment can be had in the region but more likely in Singapore or Hong Kong, rarely in Thailand.

The best place to get an Asian based contract, oddly enough, is back in the UK. Check sites such as Monster and Jobserve. This is because Asian recruiters/companies needing overseas expertise tend to go to the UK (and other western countries plus Australia) for that talent.

There is a very slight chance that you could land something yourself here in Thailand but you would need to know all the right local business people, have perfect timing and be very lucky.

The days of huge ex pat IT packages/salaries in Asia have gone as more companies have localized their staffing needs. If you are serious about wanting to work in Asia be prepared to accept local wages,

A lot of what CM says is correct. I am regional IT Manager in a division of a very large MNC and am based in Singapore but brought out from Europe by the company on relocation - permanent not contract or fixed period.

I have also worked on consultancy rates in Bangkok 8 years ago.

You are much more likely to get a job in Singapore or HK - remember though there are a lot of indian, Chinese, Philippine and even Malay that will work for a lot less than you think - unless you are very specialist in say banking, SAP or the like with specific skills a general Oracle guy can be found quite cheap locally.

I would totally agree about jobserve - thats where I used to see most of the jobs out in this region and there still can be the ang moh halo effect.

Just a story on rates - I was in a party in a bar in BKK 5 years ago when a guy approached me and asked if I was so and so who used to work for a certain telecoms comoany in Scotland (he knew me from another board).

I said yes and he asked me if I knew anyone who could do BO reporting from Oracle and hopefull some Oracle skills too. They had a guy on contract over from the UK on 600 Euro per day plus per diem exes. They wanted someone cheaper.

They wanted to half the costs at least and not pay expenses ie 250,000 to 300,000 THB a month

I said knew somebody who had made money in the dotcom boom and was spending like a sailor on payday in Thailand but was looking for something now just to stop going out everyday and night.

Well he went for it and said he would take 250k - A malay took it for 60K

That is what you are competing with - we still bring guy's out - just brought another out to set up the SAP in our new production facility - 3 years then he will be back to europe and locals employed

If I was younger and not in the role i have now I would be looking at something like SAP - you can do you MSc in it here in Singapore as wellas getting SAP Certification - course about 20K SGD - do one implementation as a junior and you will make that money back very quickly

very good advise.

your asian competition salaries are ranging from just about 60K-150K depending on their experience. that malay took a deep dive... also, if you are looking for a permanent position in thailand the salary will be much lower say 150K+ plus benefits like insurance, provident fund, education for your children (if you have), car, etc.

I have said before I could have had this role moved to Thailand when I was humming and arrring about taking it. Instinctively I knew it was wrong for me given my rcord of work in the kingdom and its distractions but asked the ex anyway where we should live.

She said Singapore which was a surprise at first.

It was the right move and looking at take home pay (thats what counts) I am much better of in Singapore - I can live except for accom on the tax difference and apart from booze its not that much more expensive plus the infrastructure works which is a big plus for m as I am a narky git about little things
