IOC SANCTIONS WEIGHTLIFTER FROM MYANMAR FOR FAILING ANTI-DOPING TEST

16 August 2004 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced that weightlifter Ms Nan Aye Khine from Myanmar has been excluded from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games after testing positive for a prohibited anabolic steroid.

The athlete Ms Nan Aye Khine (Myanmar), weightlifting:

(i) is disqualified from the women’s 48 kg weightlifting event, where she had placed fourth;

(ii) is excluded from the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004; and

(iii) shall have her Olympic identity and accreditation card be immediately withdrawn.

II The International Weightlifting Federation is requested to modify the results of the above-mentioned event accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence.

III The National Olympic Committee of Myanmar is ordered to return to the IOC, as soon as possible, the diploma awarded to the Athlete in relation to the above-noted event.

IV. This decision shall enter into force immediately.

Thailand wins third medal at Athens Games

BANGKOK, Aug 17 (TNA) - Thailand has won another medal from female weightlifting at the ongoing 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Miss Wandee Kamiam from the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket last night (Thailand's time) grabbed the second bronze medal for the nation from the female weightlifting of the 58-kilogramme class.

She won with the total weight of 230 kilogrammes.

It is the third medal for Thailand from the ongoing Athens Games, which began on 12 August. :D

The gold and silver medals went to China and North Korea, with the total weights of 237.5 kilogrammes and 232.2 kilogrammes respectively. :o

Earlier, Thailand won a bronze and a gold medal from the female weightlifting of the 48-kilogramme and 53-kilogramme categories respectively. :)

Aree Viratthavorn, won the bronze medal for the female weightlifting of the 48-kilogramme category, while Udomporn Polsak grabbed the gold medal for the 53-kilogramme category.

Aree's medal was also the first medal for the nation from the ongoing Athens Games, while that of Udomporn was the country' first gold medal. :(

With the three winning medals, Thailand is now ranked 8th in the 2004 Olympic
