No more 'visa extensions' in Patong? The Patong Immigration Office has apparently stopped issuing visa extensions (extensions to permits to stay) and is referring applicants to the main Immigration office in Phuket City. Is this a temporary or permanent measure? I ask because the Patong Immigration Office has always been very helpful in the past.

Thursday, November 8, 2007 Concerned, Patong. “The immigration office in Patong does not have enough officers to process extensions to permits to stay throughout its full office hours.

To reduce the number of applications for permits to stay that the Patong office receives, it now accepts applications on Mondays and Fridays only, from 9 am to 2 pm.

Any foreigner who wants to extend his permit to stay should come to the Phuket Immigration Office in Phuket City, which is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The Patong Immigration Office is still open Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 3 pm, for other regular services, such as foreigners registering their residential address.

Please note that we will probably close the Patong Immigration Office when the new Phuket Provincial Immigration Office in Phuket City opens later this year because the building that the Patong office is in belongs to Patong Municipality and they want it back.

We do not know exactly when that will be as we have yet to receive notice to vacate the building.”

Just from reading the article, I guess that it is permanent. It's ridiculous, of course, as most tourists to Phuket spend their precious holiday time in Patong or on one of the other beaches. How many tourists can you see on any given day walking around in Phuket City? I'm not sure where the new Phuket Immigration office will be, but knowing Thailand, probably in Baan XYZ, several miles out of town. The Phuket taxi mafia will have the last laugh: "Hey you! Taxi to immigLation? FoL you only 800 baht...". Another example of TIT.

As for me, I certainly wouldn't want to waste a full day of my holiday to travel all over the island, up and down the hills in traffic, just for the privilege to stay in Thailand a few days longer and give that xenophobic government 1,900 baht on top.

Unfortunately the Phuket Town (oops now City) Immigration office is nowhere near any bus routes, and it's too far to walk from the local bus station. So unless you have your own transport, you will be at the mercy of Tuk Tuks and motor bike taxis. Only about a 5 minute trip, but cost ??

I've seen many tourists walking a lot on Phuket, especially the long stretch between Kata and Karon. Even first-timers to Phuket notice western prices for (unsafe) tuk-tuks...

It is exactly at the old location in Saphan Hin. Take a bus from any beach for a maximum of 30 Baht to town, then a 20-30 Baht motorbike taxi to the office. Combine it with shopping, or whatever, it's easy. An if you do not want to go there, get a reasonable visa before you come to Thailand :o
