For what it is worth: Last time I was in VTE (may 2007) I took a picture at the tocket booth of the bus schedule VTE-Udon:

08:00

10:30

11:30

14:00

16:00

18:00

Price: 22.000 LAK or 80 THB.

There seems to be confusion about the posibility to book a seat in advance. It is also not possible to book a return. Quote: "Not accept get back ticket." Though this might also mean no refund.

I can advise everybody who can, to take the visa for Laos in Khon Kaen. Office hours: 08:00 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:00.

The staff speaks english and is extremely helpful and friendly. Though the form says differently, you only need one form and one passport picture. If you go for an express visa (I think 300 THB extra), you will get it in between 7 and 18 minutes. I will not give the phone number because I remember they had a wrong number on the form. Next time I go, I promise to post the exact address and telephone number.

The visa costs between 1000 and 1400 THB depending on your nationality. Plus the express charge of 300 THB.

I got a 60 day visa withour asking.. It seems the 30 day visa is history.

I would be glad if somebody could post the schedule from Udon to VTE for the friendship bus. Do mention the date please. Last time I went, all bus schedules I found online were wrong. So take mine with a pinch of salt and upgrade if possible.

Not a bad idea to take a print of your ticket from Thailand back home. Last time I arrived in BKK, I had to show it to Thai immigration. The code (since physical tickets do not exist anymore) was NOT enough.

Have a nice day.

A bus is a large motor vehicle which carries passengers from one place to another. Buses drive along particular routes, and you have to pay to travel in them.

so sorry I did not make that clear enough.

Interesting, I'm sure ... But what's a BUS ?

Naka.

A bus is a money saving machine.

I'll be arriving in Udon Thani at 5:15 pm. Aparently the latest bus leaving for the Friendship Bridge is 5pm.

Could anyone recommend a cheap way of getting there after 5 pm?

Please let me know how you arrive at Udon and what day.

If you arrive with a bus, there is no way to say when they will arrive, at least not up to 30 minutes. E.g. the bus Khon Kaen to Udon takes between 90 and 120 minutes.

If you arrive by tranis and 05:15 pm is scheduled arrival time, forget it. The train from BKK to Khom Kaen never arrives on time, I took it two times and it had a delay of 2 hours and 4 hours.

If you are in the bue terminal at 05:15, you might have a small chance.

have a nice day

If you arrive at Udonthani Airport is possble to find a minibus service to NongKhai,at least.

Also it may be possible to find a regular bus to NongKhai at the bus station; If your'e going to Vientiane for a visa, you could overnight in Udon and take the first Intrnational bus the next morning.

Soorry I can't help more, but normally drive by car.

About the Lao visa in KK,if you live there,OK;if not, itsn't worth the travel and expenses:you can have a Lao visa on arrival at the Friendship Bridge in 10 minutes for 35 $,actually less than 1200 Baht. The visa you obtain KK is not valid for 2 months, you can use it (enter the LAO P.D.R.) in the next 2 months.

For what it's worth, there is minivan that :o meets the airasia 4.15pm flight, arriving 5.15pm, waiting for those who need to fire on to Nong Khai and get into Laos same day. Cost - 150 baht.

That's my flight i.e. AirAsia arriving in Udon Thani at 5:15pm. Can you give me some more info on this service?...it would be exactly what I need.

The Inter-bus will stop at Thai custom (Friendship bridge) about 10 minutes. You have not time enough for gettign the complete VISA. Your choice is to go with Inter-bus and leave the bus at Thai custom. After getting the VISA, you can take local public bus (20 Bht.) across the bridge to Lao custom. Passing the Lao custom, you may take local tuk or local public bus (40 Bht.) to the morning market. Taxi and van are choice but the cost may be 100-150 Bht. upon the passenger sharing.
