Judging by what i see on the streets, there will inevitably be many accidents involving fireworks this weekend.

I hope I am wrong.

Do Thais have any proper education on using fireworks? It seems not...

there is no proper education in many other field....why would they bother with fireworks?

Firework displays here seem to be a lot more organized than a few years ago. Also the fireworks available to buy from the shops are a lot less powerful and dangerous than from the same time.

The fireworks we used to have in the UK when I was a kid were bloody dangerous as I recall. Catherine Wheels that flew off the nails; huge rockets; powerfully explosive "Air Bombs"; and the magnesium-filled "volcano" type fireworks that inflicted terrible burn to any kid who picked up an even spent one. You would probably get picked up as a "terrorist" for possessing them now.

I actually burned my finger ends last night trying to light my bleedin' Kratong candle in rather gusty conditions. Count me as your first casualty..?

Seems like the bombs are less powerful indeed , good thing though .

But still I do not like to walk in the masses , too much of it .

But if Bangkok is getting more sensible then that's a good thing.

A guy sitting at a table next to me had a hot air 'balloon' come down very close to him - no damage done. Other people had bits of firework rain down on them - they were letting the hot air balloons go up with a firework attached at the bottom spraying bits of burning crap on the people below - really smart:

Its beyond me why there are any fireworks at all to celebrate Loy Krathong. my understanding is that LK was a gentle ,romantic occasion, like Songkran its been hijacked by the idiots. Our village on the night of LK was like a war zone with firecrackers landing on our roof and garden and the smell of acrid smoke caused us to have to close the windows.

This post is from 2007 and now Chiang Mia is quite tame other than by the river and the bridge. The police have really cracked down from years ago.
