I am using a dial up internet connection on a TOT fixed land line

And ive now been told that ADSL is now available in my area,

So ive been to the TOT application web site to sign up and

http://www.totweb.net/eng/adsl/Default.aspx

to fill out the application on line form, , never before having had ADSL , can some one please advise me - on the TOT web page it asks if

I want to use their ADSL Modem and shows the following

Modem Numbers … DB101

XAVJ X8124r

DB108-WL

Or Use self ADSL Modem

Also it asks which package I want , giving the following

As options …

256 Kbps / 128 Kbps ( Supercyber )

512 Kbps / 256 Kbps ( Extracyber )

1M / 512 Kbps ( Silvercyber )

2M / 512 Kbps ( Goldcyber )

Ive looked through the TOT web site and can’t find any details

On the above package options, any one know where I can get

More details before I sign up , and which is best for the ADSL Modem

There’s or me buying one..?

Also what’s your personal experiences

And comments about signing up for TOT ADSL, The dial up connection

I use at the moment is un reliable and drops off many times during the day

And is giving speeds of about 42.00Kbps , the costs me including the

Internet prepaid card and 3 baht re connection cost on every drop

Off , is about 500 / 700 baht a month .

So ADSL just has to be better than my current situation ...??? :o

Thanks

Well, I signed up for tot adsl a couple months ago and it sucks, speed is marginally better than dial up and I just downloaded something and was getting 3/4kbs and I am on the 1mg/512 deal.

I think the cost from memory is 590b per month, so you would be better off so to speak, but only marginally.

I am going to call the centre several more times over the next few months and if nothing improves after having it for 6 months, I am changing to True...or whoever else is out there.

For the comments , out here in the sticks the only land lines available are TOT , and I feel lucky just to get

a TOT land line, the thing that really gets me is not having to wait for a web page to open, or a file to download

its the '' constant line drop offs '' may be this is a silly never used ADSL question .. but do ADSL connections

get drop off's as well ..? or are the problems with the speeds ..?.

If I got a slightly better speed that my 42.00Kbps along with no drops off then may be I would not feel so

bad, I only use the Internet for email, web browsing, and the odd download so not really

looking for high speed just not dropping off every day . just to add my internet connection is OK at 5.30 AM

but its doing my head in !!! :o

Thanks..

I used to have them but kicked them out 2 years ago as soon as TT&T became available (not that they are perfect, far from....)

Maybe the situation has changed, or I had simply bad luck, but there were periods that I had to use dial up again for weeks as TOT was not working. On the other hand, if it works, it's already a serious improvement over your dial up, so you might consider to start with a cheap package and eventually upgrade it if you're happy with it.

Whatever your ISP is in Thailand, their advertised speeds mean the speed you can connect to their server, NOT the internet. The 5 sites which are hosted in Thailand mostly load quite fast, the majority of the sites which are hosted overseas quite slow. Normally, this is not a big problem for basic surfing, but from the moment you want to push something more out from your internet connection, you will feel that it can become very slooooooooow....

The Idea to start with a cheap package sounds good, do you know if you sign up , its for a fixed contract

period ..? or can you bail out at any time..? There has to be some thing better than I am using

at the moment the drop offs are going to drive me to drink !! :o

any one else using TOT ADSL and can chip in some comments ....

Thanks

Service seems to depend where you are in Thailand.

I'm in the sticks just north of Nakhon Si Thammarat and am likely to have zero contention on my TOT ADSL.

I recently got the free (limited time I believe) upgrade to 1.5M/500 from the silvercyber package (512/256) which maxes out at 149kbs/52kbs. But there's the usual problem that the link from Thailand to ROTW is not so great so I rarely get these sorts of speeds out of the country. I have had P2P downloads at 120kbs which was the maximum set in the software. The 149kbs was on a video on a well-hosted site in Thailand. P2P uploads run up to 52kbs if I let them. Bandwidth tests show lower figures.

That's 700 baht a month, though I think it should be 1000 when the limited period upgrade expires. Personally I have had no untoward problems with the service, but it seems like many others do.

have Maxnet (i call it Maxsh*t) for 1½ years and TOT since 3 months. Maxnet sucks, TOT (touch wood!) until now very reliable.

i have been using TOT for the past 3 months in BKK.. i think during the past 3-4 weeks, it has stablised and i didnt encounter any downtime for the past 3-4 weeks.

Im on cybergold (2mb). Downloading with bitcomet peaks at 200kb/s +- usually after midnight.

speed is good in the noon.

Yes, TOT has performed well enough for me in November.

Thanks for the replys ... just had to re-connect again as another drop off ( 6th so far )

does ADSL suffer from drop offs or is it just a speed thing..? That's all I need is

to sign up for ADSL and have the thing stop working altogether by dropping of the connection

I could stand a slower connection no problem - after going through all the current

drop off problems... :o

any other TOT ADSL users out there care to comment please

Thanks

I'm not sure, but you better read the small letters in the contract well, especially if they come with a free router. I remember when I canceled my contract with them, they told me I was lucky I could, because I was already a customer for over one year.

I have been on TOT ADSL for about 5 months, after moving to Nakhon Pathom. I use the GoldCyber package.

Performance was good for the first few weeks, then fell off badly -- slow with many outages. I finally went to their office in NP, and they went out of their way to check the lines and connections. Their engineers were in and out of my house, and climbing the telephone poles, for about three hours. Performance is now satisfactory again.

They aren't perfect, and I don't get the rated speeds. But this is Thailand, and my expectations are modest.

thanks justwilliam

were you told just what was causing the problems ..? and you say

slow with many outages , does this outages mean no connection at all

as in my problem with line drop offs..? and what sort of modem / router did you go for..?

Hi Thailife

I live in the boonies down south near Krabi. Similar situation to yours had TOT dial-up till ADSL came along then switched to that.

We went to the TOT office to sign up for the ADSL and though wifie did it all it seemed pretty painless. I got an ADSL modem from TOT (Xavi 7822r+) that came with an installation CD. Unfortunately all the instructions on the CD were in Thai but commonsense and help from wifie made it OK.

Installing it was fairly simple just plug it all in and run the CD install. Unfortunately nobody told me that they have to do something along the line and I could not connect until the “engineer” had been along to make that connection.

Wifie phoned them and the engineer was along the next day so brownie points for TOT.

My old mother board did not have a LAN connection so had to install a LAN card. If your M/B has a LAN connection, as most now have, you are ready to rock. The LAN looks same as a phone plug just a little bigger.

I started on the cheapest package (Supercyber) and found that an improvement over the dial-up. Recently they offered an upgrade to 512Kbps for only an extra 90฿ per month and I am now on that.

I have no problems with TOT unlike others on this forum. Maybe my expectations are lower!. Sure it does not always work and sometimes it drops out and goes slow but compared to what others complain about I guess I am a satisfied customer.

I would recommend getting one of the TOT modems then you will get the installation to go with it and they can’t shift the blame if there are problems. I don’t know anything about the different types so perhaps someone else can chip in and give some advice. My own modem from TOT works just fine.

I would recommend keeping your dial-up set-up for those times the ADSL does not work. I have mine still set up so all I need to do to use the dial-up is plug in the phone jack and select one of my old dial-up providers. Though ADSL works on the same phone line sometimes the phone will work but the ADSL does not. This can be a bit frustrating when you try to figure out why you can’t connect.

I have a program called “Bandwidth Vista” that shows how the connection is. It’s too easy getting in a flap checking and rechecking your end when all the time the problem is at the other end.

Finally be sure you have a filter with your package. It’s a little box that the phone line plugs into the one line goes to your phone and the other to the ADSL modem, this allows the phone to be used while you are on the net.

I think that's I can think of hope this helps.

I thought the prices quoted by TOT were too high, so on the day of installation I went to the local PC shop to buy one. They didn't have one. I tried another shop too - nothing there.

The TOT engineer lent me the one he had in the van and the next day I went to a bigger PC shop in the main town. After explaining what I needed I paid about 1200 baht less than the TOT price, though I got home and found out it wasn't what I needed. Another trip back to the shop the next day and I got what I needed, but with only a slight saving on the TOT price. Petrol for two trips into town and the time taken made it most unworthwhile.

I've now got a Zyxel Prestige 600 series, which does the job fine and lets P2P do its thing automatically and setup was a breeze. I can't remember what the TOT one was, but it worked fine too.

So unless you really, really want to get your own or can get a much better price, I'd say to just go with the TOT one.

When I mentioned outages, I meant a mix of dropped lines, together with longer periods when my router was indicating there was no ADSL signal on the line. These periods sometimes lasted for several hours.

The engineers said that the problem was caused by damaged connections along the telephone line, which they attributed to the effects of severe weather during that period. Certainly it seems OK now they have "cleaned" the line. By the way, I live in a rural area about 3km from their local switch.

Regarding routers, I use a Linksys WAG54G wireless device, a combination router and modem. I have used this particular router for 2 1/2 years now in three different locations in Thailand with two different service providers, and it has been rock solid the whole time. Setup takes less than 5 minutes. It was expensive when I first purchased it (in Panthip), but for me at least, has paid off with trouble-free performance.

Thanks guys ..

The more I read about the TOT ADSL problems and all , it seems the only / best option I

have to get away from my dial up dropping problems :o at least if the ADSL connection

drops off, I should be able to revert to my old dial up connection , ( well I at least hope so )

so have the best of both worlds ..?

any other dial up to ADSL switchers out there ...comments please :D

The extra 90B is just added to the standard phone bill its listed as ADSL on the bill. Incase there is some confusion the 90B is extra to the origional 500B for the Supercyber service so I pay a total of 590B per month for ADSL. I am now on "Bestcyber" which if I rememer correctly is double the "Supercyber" speeds of 265/128.

I don't realy understand all the different speed ratings but can see from my downloads that the extra 90B is giving me about twice the speed than before. If the wind is in the right direction I can download a 600MB movie overnight.

Upgrading to ADSL was a good move for me not only do I get faster speeds I can use the pone at the same time, no more missed calls. Also on dial up, even though I was with the TOT "free" service my internet bill was between 300/400B per month so the extra cost of ADSL is not so much and now the cost is fixed no matter how long I am on-line.
