I was thinking about getting my self one or the other for Christmas but I really don't know much about either. Which is more available including games here?

I have heard alot of problems with the Xbox overheating and needing to be sent in for repair, is that still an issue? does X box play blu ray or is that another expensive add on?

I am not worried to much about online gaming, which is the best choice for LOS?

What do the games and the consoles cost here?

Where is the best place to buy? I am near Pattaya or is it worth the trip to BKK?

Thanks ahead for the info!

Go for the Xbox 360. It has more games and blu-ray isn't a necessity right now. It's cheaper than a PS3 in Bangkok, which costs around 14k baht for the premium package (console + hard drive + controller) and the PS3 can go over 15k baht (40GB is the cheapest right now). If you're going to buy it here, chances are the 360 will be modded and you will be able to play back up games which cost 150 baht at most. Fake games for the PS3 is unavailable now so you'll have to go with the originals that can cost over 2k baht. About the hardware issues with the 360, if you take good care of your console, it won't have any problems. I've had mine for over a year now and it's still running very efficiently. The Xbox doesn't play blu-ray nor does it have an add-on for it but it does have an add-on for a HD-DVD player. I'm not too familiar with Pattaya but if you do plan on buying it in Bangkok, try MBK or Panthip Plaza.

Good luck!

Thanks Mill!

I had that backwards then...X box plays the HD-DVD......I like that idea then I can get a little hi def out of my TV finally! I also like the idea of being able to use backups of the games.... I am leaning towards trhe xbox right now....

If you get a modded xbox360, chances are that you might get banned from xbox live if you ever want to play online in the future. Some people have bought 2 machines to deal with this problem, 1 modded and 1 unmodded. The the games are definately cheaper since it can play copied games. The 360 has been out for a longer period of time so there are many games to choose from.

I have a PS3 and it's good so far. Right now, the PS3 is starting to gain some momentum with its lower price and increasing amount of games. 2008 should be a great year for the PS3. I also have a Wii and that's a great machine as well.

I have considered getting a 360. The main thing that held me back is that it's basically a computer and the dreaded red ring of death. Having your new machine die on you due to overheating sucks since you'll have basically no manufacturer's warranty. If you do get the 360, make sure it's one of the new 65nm machines.

Thank for the heads up Gluestick...

what is the deal with the 65nm? What is that? How will I know if it is this?

65nm means lower power consumption and no more overheating issues... www.gcorners.com has those in stock, otherwise on Anandtech.com there is a visual guide on how to find out (involving shining a flashlight through the vent :o )

One other nice aspect about the XBox is the newly released DivX playback support, quite handy if you're into downloading movies...PS3 has announced this for a future update as well, though.

I've had mine 11 months now and no probs at all....I keep it free from obstacles and well ventilated. I usually have the air con on when Im playing or have a small fan angled so it blows onto me and the console.

Getting chipped is fine as games are cheap ( I now have 27!) but if you play online you will most likely get banned eventually, I did after 5 months of playing online with copied games.

I have read though that its the copied games that get you banned not the chip, so you could just buy copied versions of single player games (0blivion, Bioshock etc) and just get original copies of the best multiplayer games (COD4, R6, Halo 3 etc) and only use yr original games online.

I would prefer the PS3 but I think until they are available modded and unlocked so they will play all region dvds and copied games XBOX will have to do.

Any word on when PS3 will be availabel chipped?

Is the divx support a downloadable upgrade or only availabe on the new consoles?

DivX and Xvid support is included in the latest "Fall Update" software revision which can be downloaded by any Internet-connected XBox360

Right now, I'd recommend the Xbox360 because the game library is much larger, and it's more mature, and the 65nm chip makes it less prone to failure.

Of course, as with anything, you simply buy whatever system has the games you like to play. A console (or PC) is just a paperweight if it doesn't play the games you like.

The Wii, although technically far inferior, sells much better than either system because it appeals to a large audience. Nintendo has always focused on the games and not the tech, and it shows.

I agree with you. If I had to buy a second console it would be the XBox. But, as you said, games make the console, and right now Nintendo is putting out some great games for everyone on the Wii. Friends come over to play with my Wii and hands down the game we end up playing more than any game is Wii Sports and that has less than stellar ghraphics. I have always been an advocate of gameplay over graphics and Nintendo obviously believes in this also. Nintendo games are just plain fun!

Xbox over PS3, but right now I would choose the Wii over both of them.

I agree the Xbox 360 has the better games, but it is worthless when you can't play it because of the 'red ring of death'. I just had this happen after owning the machine about a year and a half. Now trying to get it repaired. If you do end up getting a 360 make sure it has the Falcon chip, I've heard there are fewer problems. Never thought I would say it, but now I'm actually debating getting the PS3 since the upcoming lineup seems interesting and reliability seems better.

I got the ring of death after only 6 months of owning my 360 (well ventilated,etc..). I'd be lying if I said i didn't like it before it broke, but I will not buy one again. I now own a ps3 now, and I am very happy with it. I think 2008 is looking good for the ps3 too, but if you get lucky and your xbox doesn't fry, then its still a good system.

As I said, the Xbox360 is only good *right now* if you get the 65nm version. For the previous version, it was hit and miss with the RRODs, and since the shops in Thailand mostly don't want to fix this condition, you're screwed (in the US, you could send it to MS to fix/replace within a month, but not here). Most shops here should be selling the 65nm version now.
