I have said many times vietnam is coming up on the blind side of many very fast - it also has a lot of advantages.

Why is the likes of Microsoft, Intel etc going there instead of Thailand?

Just yesterday in The Straits Times the 3rd Singapore-Viet Industrial Park was announced in the Hanoi are to go with the existing 2 in the southern / Saigon area.

I do not know if its each but it was mentioned 75,000 jobs have been created in these two industrial parks already and they are hoping for the same with the 3rd - where can you compare the same in Thailand?

The smart money is on Vietnam in the region right now as the economy to watch - I reckon it will outstrip Thailand in a decade and Thailand will be rlegated to the 3rd division in Asia

China and India - special cases - the premiership?

Gang of 4 in first Division - Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, HK

Second division - Thailand, PI, Malaysia, Indonesia

Then the rest but Vietnam will get promoted - who gets relegated?

Vietnam is pitching itself as a better China than China. With very business-friendly politics.

Thailand's foreign business politics are more or less non-existent. There's the whole "hub of Pick-up trucks" but that's pretty much it - the rest is all protectionism towards Thai businesses. Please don't take that as a complaint, it's just the way it is.

One has to really think about what would be gained by bettering China - are people more happy there than in Thailand? The Thais seem to be doing pretty well in terms of standard of living if you ask me.

To be fair though VN is not just competing against China as no country does that.

It is also up against the likes of Thailand, Malaysia et al too.

All this talk of VN has got me off my arse to look for a VN Mutual Fund and I think I have found one!

Vietnam still has a yearly per capita GDP of $750. This is quite a bit lower than China or Thailand which are in the $2k yearly per capita GDP. Its easy to grow when the labor costs are so low. Many are mentioning Bangladesh as the up and comer who can knock off Vietnam as the fastest grower in a few years.

Would the geography and comminications problems Bangladesh suffers not be a major obstacle in their way?
