Amor Restaurant

Last week I went to this restaurant with my wife and her brother and his boyfriend. The service was good but the next morning we all suffered very bad food poisoning and my wife spent 3 nights in hospital.

It seems there was something wrong with the fish as we all had seafood.

Have other members suffered at this place recently?

If 3 people all eat the same food and 12 or so hours later get sick it is very likely that this restaurant is to blame.....so long as the 3 people didn't eat the same food or drink the same water at any other place within the previous 48 hours or so.

Where is the Amor?

Is Amor the restaurant just off Soi 13/4 going into the Boyzone area?

The unfortunate thing about eating in any restaurant in Thailand is that any staff who have diaorrhea are unlikely to call in sick and the chances of food poisoining by somebody with diaorrhea is very high. Of course the other thing is Thai people seem to have diaorrhea a lot more often than they should. It amazes me the amount of falang that I see eating the street vendors food and are then suprised when they get sicK !!!!! Tw*ts.

I used to work for the NHS in the UK and the hospital staff there where forced to stay away from work for 2 weeks after having diaorrhea as well as the time off while you had it and this was for all staff not just nursing staff and doctors.

I would consider my chances of food poisoning to be much lower from a street vendor. The ingredients are bought fresh due to limited storage, and high turnover.

So I guess I'm a <deleted>.

But I have enjoyed some of my most memorable culinary delights on the sidewalk.

Personal hygiene is important but not the main factor........

Food poisoning through eating someone's faeces after it's been cooked is unlikely........

Most food poisoning does not come from peoples personal hygiene it comes from the STORAGE of food.

This info can actually be checked out in a recent UK where an ill-aimed campaign was much criticized for this in that country's media.

If someone smears a small amount on shit on a piece of meat the act of cooking it will kill those bacteria.

Which brings us to street food.

THis is really pretty safe in Thailand as you are looking at methods of storing and cooking that have been carried out in this climate for centuries....... fridges and chill-serve are new to THailand............if you want to get a good dose of food poisoning in Thailand eat western food )or non- Thai) especially at a buffet.

You sound just like some middle-aged woman moaning about Pattaya......the word you're looking for is "homophobic"......PS it has been shown that most homophobes are actually suppressing their own homosexual tendencies!

I have had the misfortune to contract amoebic dysentery on a number of occasions (confirmed by lab tests), and the specialists at top hospitals have all told me the same thing.

Firstly, these parasites can sit in you stomach for a long time before they actually start to bother you. Sometimes you will just have mild diarrhoea, and then - eventually - maybe when your resistance is low, you will go down with a full scale stomach cramp, shits and high fever, which is potentially life threatening if untreated.

They have all told me that by far and away the main cause for food poisoning, dysentery etc is unclean water, as it often contains parasites. This is more likely to affect food prepared on street stalls, but it can really happen anywhere.

Although Thais also occasionally succumb to these maladies, they carry antibodies in their stomachs that usually neutralise these bugs.

The longer you stay here, and the more local food you ingest, the more immune you will become to these problems.

Personally, in spite of a few very unpleasant bouts, I'm not about to change my way of life to avoid potentially unclean food and will eat whenever and wherever I wish, including street stalls. Indeed, if you travel to rural areas, as I do quite frequently, you have little choice than to eat from local establishments.

The one compensation is that every doctor, clinic and hospital in Thailand are expert at dealing with such illnesses, so help is always near at hand :o

So is it only farang that should stay away from street or hawker food?

Do you reccomend that for Singapore too?

No wonder the NHS is so inefficient and has one of the highest sick rates for any employer - if they stay off for two weeks after the skitters without even knowing the cause - lazy more like it!

Not only do you have an unrequited desire to BE a cockroach, you ARE one. Bigots are sub-human and crawl around in the darkness. Once they are exposed to the light, they should be stepped on and squashed. Go back under the sink. You don't belong in tolerant LOS.

For the record, obviously Mr. Cockroach is a fully out homophobe, but I didn't comment before because I thought it best for him to have a nice pleasant stay in his very own ROACH MOTEL.

That still doesn't make Amor a good restaurant ...

Ditto with the ameobic dysentry (not in LOS) but the doc told me I probably haven't washed my hands properly after having a cr*p / p*ss. So it could quite possibly come from poor hygiene of kitchen staff that have (mis)handled the food after it's been cooked.

Mobi ....you've been reading......!

BUT...

You can't carry anti-bodies for parasites!

That locals are "immune" to food poisoning is a bit of a myth too....they just know where and what to eat....and certainly don't eat all those western buffets....but they do get the shits too...guaranteed!

E. G. - "The one compensation is that every doctor, clinic and hospital in Thailand are expert at dealing with such illnesses, so help is always near at hand "

however...I've had one case of food poisoning in 14 years here and I must say the treatment I received was nothing short of hopeless!!!!

But you do make the point that the symptoms of parasite and other forms of poisoning through drink or eating can take WEEKS to materialise....this means that those who blame the last place they ate oput of hand can be seriously mislead.

Rubbish you can't carry anti bodies to parasites!

I see our resident food poisoning expert is back in the saddle again :D

Maybe what the doctors were saying was that Thais do not suffer the same reaction to the parasites as farangs do, because they have been harbouring the parasites in their stomachs since they were old enough to drink infected water, whereas we haven't.

Happy now? :o

Neither do you, from this comment.

And what do you mean "Tolerant LOS"? Is just as intolerant as anywhere else, but maybe over different subjects.

Tolerance has to be learned - the basic ethos of most higher-level mammals is protection of territory and their own little community.

Yes they get the shits but they can tolerate certain germs other baddies better than a newbie just exposed to them if they have more exposure - pretty basic science.

As the OP mentioned, 3 people got seriously ill within 12 hours of eating at Amor. Thats an extremely good indication that what they ate there made them sick....especially considering the food they ate was fish.

What type of food poisoning takes WEEKS to materialise?

I hope the owner of the Amor has been contacted. I think he would probably be happy to pay any medical expenses for this incident as the restaurant is most likely responsible. Or perhaps a free meal? Bon Appetit!

I agree.

But no less a learned gentlemen than a senior physician at Bumrungrad lectured me on the unclean water that I should be careful about, and the fact that Thais have much less problem due to their exposure to it from an early age.

Anyway, as I said, I'll take my chances. Thai food's too tasty to let these things worry me too much.

I also share your views about a lot of dodgy farang food.

Of course the other thing is Thai people seem to have diaorrhea a lot more often than they should.

I'm not surprised that Thais suffer from diarrhea "more often than they should".

Intollerance to chili is probably a major factor as most Thais seem addicted to the burn. Another common cause of diarrhea is the coconut used in the curries. I had to give them up before things got back to normal...which is a shame because I really enjoy eating them, however I don't miss the hot diarrhea burn.

Our tolerance also increases with exposure to them too - there are some items which will always cause illness.

Its not so long ago I was on a charity housebuild from work in Indonesia. Alongside us was a very dirty stream with off runs from local shacks etc. The kids were swimming and diving right among us - the Singapore Dr's I was with were shocked but other said the kids will have immunity to most of that now and said maybe their own kids were too sterile these days.

Its also strange with rotavirus - every one of us has had about 3 episodes of this by the time we are 5 years old when our resistance builds and immunity system kicks in. Problem is in the developing world where the side effects such as dehydration etc can kill

Ther is now a vaccine for this - sales are crap in Singapore as they have to pay for it.
