Guest Property Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I applied for a Certificate of Residence at Suan Plu immigration last week, they said it'd be ready in a month. No fee associated but it's an awfully long wait just to get a bit of paper to support the renewel of my Thai drivers license.
ignis Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 No idea why people bother with Immigration or Embassy for this......... Myself have always gone to the Town Hall and the Local Junta will give you this paper... 1st time you need someone to go with you + Copies of passport and where you live.. call back next day to pick up paper stamped with a nice big red seal.... [accepted for when I bought my car + got the Thai drivers license + the 5 yr renewal] If you copy this and keep it, next time you need such a document then just take it with you yourself and they will look it up on there PC and print out a new one, the Junta will then sign it and put the Seal on it, and your away in 15 mins. Why do Immigration take so long? = I'm told they send out the local Police to check that you do live at the address given = 4 - 5 weeks
thaihome Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 A work permit will work as a Certificate of Residence since it has your home address in it (at least mine does). TH
tominchaam Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Either you're a troll or there must be some misunderstanding about the process of Permanent Residency.Maybe in one month you have an interview. The process to get PR is slightly more troublesome than renewing the driver's license. The OP is not applying for a Permanent Residence according to what he writes and the way I understand it. He just needs a proof of residence which is needed to get a driver’s licence.

By far the easiest in my experience and saves a long trip to Bangkok or Immigration. My local Amphur will even do it while you wait.

I guess it's because the local transport office didn't mention this option when I asked. 1st time you need someone to go with you + Copies of passport and where you live.. call back next day to pick up paper stamped with a nice big red seal.... [accepted for when I bought my car + got the Thai drivers license + the 5 yr renewal] I have a chanot which has both my name & my wife as co-owners. Will that do?
opalhort Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Is it something new that a Certificate of Residence is now required for renewal of the DL? I needed it only for my first application but never for any subsequent renewals the last of which was in 2003 (due again next year). The documents needed were: application form, PP and current DL. and I had to answer a verbal question from the officer if I still live at the same address. (at the Land Transport Department BKK, Thonburi) opalhort
apetley Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Depends where and what office you use to renew. Kanchanaburi are very strict and only accept a letter from your local Amphur even for driving license renewals. If you are working you can use a WP, I think, but I am not so only had the option of the Amphur letter.

Take the house book too, you should have no problem.

Don’t take for granted all Amphurs will write this document confirming where you live. To me it appears that it is rarely done in Amphurs with plenty of farangs unless you have a good contact to use. There should however be no fee involved as such a document should be free. Another alternative is to apply for a “yellow book” but Amphurs with a lot of farangs are getting restrictive in giving them out.
astral Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 IME the letter is only needed when you apply the first time, or need to change your address.
apetley Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 IME the letter is only needed when you apply the first time,or need to change your address. My Dept of Land and Transport(Kanchanaburi) would only issue me a 5 year license if I should them a letter from my local Amphur confirming where I lived. TIT and I know that experiences elsewhere will be different.

astral Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I must admit I am intrigued by this idea of asking the Amphur for the letter. Except in rare circumstances farangs are not on the household papers, so the Amphur office has no record of us. So how can they confirm where we live??? When necessary I have always obtained such letters from the local immigration office, one advantage of living in a town with a port. The letter has been prepared whilst I waited, and is free of charge. In Chonburi I did not need a letter even when I moved from a one year driving license to a 5 year. TIT
tutsiwarrior Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 if one wanted to obtain a certificate of residence from one's local immigration office what documentation is required by them to verify one's domicile? All I got is a chanote with me listed as the usufructary...it don't prove nuthin' regarding one's claim as to address of domicile...

All I got is a chanote with me listed as the usufructary...it don't prove nuthin' regarding one's claim as to address of domicile... I am told they will ask you for the address of your local Police. they then contact that Police Station and if it is the correct one a plain clothes Policeman comes to check then reports back to Immigration... 2 different people have told me this = the letter takes about 4 - 5 weeks before you can get it from Immigration.

It only works if you are doing 90-day reporting, then they have a record of you.

To get the letter my father in law had to come to the Amphur with me. Because he is listed as the owner of the house where we live he had to make a statement that I was living at his house. They then issued me with the letter confirming that I also lived there. The problem I had in Kanchanaburi is that the letter Immigration supply does not give my address, just that I am resident in Thailand. That is not good enough for Kanchanaburi Dept of Land & Transport. As for a letter from my home Embassy in Bangkok, I was told that they will not accept that as proof of address because they 'do not trust the Embassy letter'. Make of that what you will! Hopefully in 5 years time when I come to renew again they will accept my yellow house book(if I can get one) for the house we will be building next year. One thing is virtually certain, the goalposts will have moved once again.

retiredusn Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 All I needed was my rental agreement, and the document was free, took about 10min.

This fits with what has been reported for obtaining a certificate of residence from Chiang Mai Immigration, namely, you now have to be here on a one-year extension of stay permit.
