Anyone make a suggestion for effective internet connectivity, whilst on the move. I occasionally, maybe 2/3 times a year find myself in a position where net access is problematic. Find the AIS connexion {via phone} often too slow to be usable.

Suggestions?

AirCard + DTAC ?

Given minimal usage profile not sure there's an easy or cost effective solution.

Regards & TIA

CAT CDMA, works just perfectly, a constant 14.6Kbps both upload and download, 750B per month give or take a few. USB Modem so you can use it with just about any PC.

I've tried DTAC EDGE, it's just not stable enough, loses inbound data very frequently and you need to reset it.

Have you looked at Hutch? Their new CDMA EV-Do will get up to 800 kbps depending on how close you are to the cell.

I use the older Hutch CDMA 2000 system,,,,,,,,,,averages about 100 kbps in most plces I go.

At the moment Hutch does not have data service in all provinces but they are geting there

Do these CAT and Hutch services require you to buy one of those expensive Solomon modems? It seems the cheapest is about 6000 baht? Can't one just buy the cheapest CDMA mobile phone available? How much would that be? Sorry for all the questions but I'm fairly clueless about the mobile internet and trawling through all the posts on this forum has just confused me even more. I was thinking a Nokia 3110 with an AIS simcard with an EDGE data plan would be the best option.

I use the Solomon model SCMi250u available at telawiz with a monthly plan from AIS which is a computer sim card and have had no problems at all while traveling around. If you call 1155 which is ais they can give you their diff. plan's in english. Good Luck

Before anyone makes up their mind to buy this or that, they should try it in the area where they want to use it the most. I live out in the boonies of Loei province and there is no EDGE or CDMA signal. Out here you have the option of CrapStar or plain old GPRS. True sends me free SIM cards once in a while and there is no signal. AIS GPRS is normally a little better than D-Tac GPRS. Both are usually agonizingly slow.

Is that GPRS too, the same as the Solomon USB modems? If it is I would agree with Gary, slow, dropped connections etc. Better than nothing but not much better :o

Thanks to all those contributing here. Food for thought, by the by Gray, my problem is I only know it's a dead zone when I'm there, or I might be in the locale once in six months. With AISm for example I may get 5 networ bars, but GPRS is virtually non-existent. <sigh>

However, the try it point is very valid.

The cheapest I see that for is 8500 baht. What's the advantage of using that over using a Nokia 3110 which is available in Carrefour for 4500 baht?

Several years ago I paid 9,500 baht for a Solomon USB modem. The new ones are EDGE compatible but if there is no EDGE available it is no better. There is absolutely no advantage for the Solomon over my Nokia N80 phone. In fact I loaned the Solomon to a Thai friend of mine a couple years ago. He is still using it.
