I get it. I went on a business trip to the US in 2005. After having breakfast in the hotel, I asked a (presumably) Mexican waiter for additional "butter" for my toast. The waiter said politely but in a curt fashion: "I don't get your meaning, sir!" I politely repeated the word "butter" after which an old woman sitting opposite me impatiently bellowed at the waiter: "Hee meens budderrr!". I stress that the woman pronounced the "t" in butter as "d" as in budder. The "er" turned from an "a" into "errr" and lets not forget that the "r" became an extended, multiple "rrrrrr". The presumably Mexican waiter than said: "I see!". I came across a lot of Americans who tried to work out whether phrases, such as "I'll chase it up" should it be "I'll chase it down"? Tomaytow vs tomahtoe was also a hot topic and everyone wanted to know whether we all hated Americans because of Bush. 😁
