I'm heading down to Krabi (Railey to be precise) around mid-April, would I need to pre-book accommodation or can I just turn up and would I get better deals on "walk-in" rates.

Better you book in advance - mid-April is Songkran, the Thai New Year, otherwise known as the world's largest water fight. Though Krabi won't be as crowded as the other areas, hotel rooms don't get cheap until at least mid-May.
