Police and social development officials arrested 16 foreign women accused of soliciting prostitution during a crackdown in Bangkok’s Sukhumvit area on 20 March 2026. The operation, conducted at around 20:30 in Sukhumvit Soi 4, Khlong Toei district, followed complaints from foreign tourists and reports circulating on social media. Authorities said the enforcement action was aimed at addressing public nuisance concerns in a busy nightlife area.

Officers from Lumpini Police Station worked alongside investigation units, Metropolitan Police Bureau teams, immigration officers, and officials from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. After a period of surveillance, the coordinated teams moved in to detain the suspects. The arrests formed part of broader efforts to respond to public complaints and maintain order in the area.

Authorities confirmed that the 16 suspects included 10 Tanzanian nationals, five Kenyan nationals and one Vietnamese national. All were charged under Section 5 of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act for soliciting or approaching individuals in public places for the purpose of prostitution in a manner considered open and causing public nuisance. Officials stated that such activities had drawn repeated complaints from visitors and residents.

Following the arrests, officials from the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development will impose administrative fines on the suspects. After this process, the individuals will be handed over to Immigration Bureau officers for further action. Their permission to stay will be revoked and they will be deported under Section 12(8) of the Immigration Act.

The suspects have already been transferred to the Immigration Bureau headquarters in Suan Phlu for legal proceedings. Authorities indicated that the case will proceed in accordance with established legal procedures, involving both administrative penalties and immigration enforcement measures. The operation reflects ongoing coordination between police and social agencies in handling such cases.

Khaosod reported that officials are expected to continue monitoring areas identified through complaints and online reports. Further enforcement actions may be carried out if similar activities persist. Authorities have not announced additional operations but signalled continued vigilance in maintaining public order in key tourist districts.

Maybe they should add this "profession" to the reserved only for Thais list - some of the reserved list just crazy

Funny as all arrested foreign but 0 Thais (We're a great country no national prostitutes here) 😂

What kind of moralist busybody would complain about any streetwalker?!? They're no bother and there when you need them.

Only sawdust sacks on AN would complain, but I do hate Putins subjects earning baht here.!

give em a portion and move on.....

Good thing there were no Thai women selling the goods on Sukhumvit...We got to keep the streets clean....lol

I wonder how many of them would have been here if they had to go through the old visa system for certain countries, needing to prove sufficient funds for the planned stay in Thailand.

The 60 day visa free for all, whilst no doubt is generating massive amounts of tourist spending, has also created an opening for non genuine tourists to misbehave.

I can't remember reading the daily reports of the carnage and problems in high tourist destinations a few years ago.

Maybe it is just being reported in the media more now, or i have a short memory.

Of course working as a prostitute is 'reserved' for Thais - that's why the foreign women are being prosecuted and, presumably, deported! Thai hookers soliciting for sex on Beach Road are regularly 'arrested' for soliciting, but it's only a minor offence, so they are just fined (minimally) and let go.

Not many American hookers here.

It doesn't say but I'd wager they all came in visa exempt or visa on arrival perhaps.

The reported plans to cut visa exempt stays from 60 days to 30 will make no difference whatsoever to this kind of transgression. They'd still get stamped in without background checks to then disappear from the radar - till someone complains perhaps like here.

I couldn't care less either way. I've always been within the 60/30/60/30 limits anyway and now use the 90 day Non-O with extensions.

I just object to this facile claim it will combat crime. It won't. It's simply a claim designed to make the government look good in the headlines. 'Look, we're doing something about crime'. Actually they're jerking those around who are genuinely traveling and harbor nothing but good in their hearts and stick to the regulations. They are now forced to go to Immigration if they want to stay longer than 30 days. Jobs for the boys eh.

With the exception of some women from neighboring countries like Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, all foreign prostitutes in Thailand have been trafficked. Getting trafficked women off the streets and not allowing foreign traffickers to gain much of a foothold in Thailand are good things and benefit us all.

I don't think anyone, foreign tourists and resident expats as well as Thais on both sides of the law, wants the Boris mafia or West African gangs to become a heavier presence on the Thai commercial sex scene. That would be the day the music dies.

The Thai women flogging their patch on Soi 4 aren't women.

Quite the bold statement you've made. So not a single one is there by her own choice eh.

That's not at all what I wrote or believe. Almost all foreign women trafficked to Thailand have chosen to work as prostitutes. Their participation is consensual and not against their will.

However, trafficking does NOT mean the women are necessarily forced into prostitution. The definition used by the U.N. in its protocol on trafficking states that the consent of the victim of trafficking is irrelevant. If an individual or group arranges for a woman to work as a prostitute in a foreign country and keeps all or part of the money she earns, then it's trafficking. It may or may not include kidnapping, deception or physical force. The national laws against trafficking of most countries reflect this definition.

Basically, traffickers will recruit women, arrange visas when needed, pay air fares and provide the woman a place to stay while abroad. Depending on the circumstances, the traffickers may also steer customers to her. Pimps or mamasans will keep the girls in line and collect the money from the girls.

The huge downside is the woman has little or no control over how or where she works, nor is she able to quit. That's the situation for foreign prostitutes in Thailand. They are trafficked, but with their consent.

Its not all of what you said but you did say it. Which anyone with half a sense knows its not all of them. No one is debating there is trafficking. But to claim all is just nonsense.

My point

The local streetwalkers I expect.....

Is that an oxymoron or do we need a whole new word in the English language?

As long as they stay away from the cute thai girls, I don't give a damn.

Brings a smile to my face when I read stories like this

How can the police keep a straight face arresting foreign prostitutes

And no Thais involved

They can't get their $3,000 Las Vegas fees here. And besides nobody would want to get with them anyway as they're typically pretty nasty looking.

I've seen many African women on Sukumvit over the years, and I don't think I've ever seen one that was even remotely attractive. So why would any guy in his right mind choose that over a lovely Thai woman?

Singapore is one of the best examples of this visa system. Orchard Towers. Thai women make much better money there and flights are cheap. Talked to many on the plane.

On holiday, they're more accustomed to giving it away for good time. Japanese women in Canada the same.

Because the foreigners are being arrested for working illegally. Thai prostitutes who are soliciting in public are regularly arrested but as it's a minor offence, and they're just fined a minimal amount and released (to go back to work!)

We don't need a new word, but some people need to use the existing word "trafficking" correctly. It does not mean the women were always forced, kidnapped or deceived into prostitution. It also includes women who knew they would be providing sexual services in a foreign country and agreed to it.

It's the circumstances under which a woman is moved from Country A to Country B for prostitution that determines whether trafficking has taken place. If a pimp or gang or some other group "arranges" her trip and pays for her air fare, then keeps some of the money she earns, that's trafficking. I explained this in detail in an earlier post in this thread.

Reports in the mainstream media, as well as fictional accounts in books and movies, tend to focus on forced and involuntary trafficking, but not all trafficking is like that. It's still wrong and exploitive, but not necessarily violent,
