Hot Chinese tea with ginger is very good.

And the Chinese medicine place in the market has some pellet shaped things, great for irritating cough.

YEs i agree .. GInger is very good .

you can either buy the ready podwer form and add hot water to drink it or the herbal tea version from chinese or thai shop ..

you can also Make it yourself .. is really very very easy .. my MOm brew it every few days when i am in chiangmai .. and i enjoy drinking it .

usually i like the Luke warm version ..

Ginger TEa recipe is SIMPLE

1 Ginger . - cut it into slice . - depend on how much you drink .

add water .. more water if you want a mild taste and less water if you want a strong taste .

as long as the water is enough to submerge the ginger

Boil it .. for like 5- 10 min .. or put it in a mirco wave for 5 min ,

let it sit for a while ..

choice of addictive .

sugar

brown sugar

honey ,

lemon juice + honey

salt

salt + lime juice

GInger - water - sugar or choice of addictive at your option

if you lie a Mild version just add more water .

i cook about 500 ml of water with half a ginger - my father like the stronger taste one

good luck ..

The flu is caused by a virus. Antibiotics are drugs that kill bacteria. Please don't take antibiotics if you have the flu - it's not going to help. Over-use of antibiotics helps encourage the development of drug resistant bacteria. Many doctors are complicit in this, prescribing antibiotics just to make their patients happy (give the people what they want). But this practice is more than wasteful, it's potentially dangerous. By all means go see a doctor if you have the flu, but don't blindly accept a course of antibiotics if what you have is a virus.

this time of year there's always a lot of nasty bugs flying around that attack the nose and throat. I read your hands are the main carrier of the virus - touch a door handle then scratch your nose. I had a flu jab a few weeks ago.

Many of these bouts of flu / sore throat / sore eyes / blocked sinuses at present are due to the increasing levels of pollution. Take antihistamine and paracetamol to reduce symptoms. Steer clear of Antibiotics unless your symptoms are definitely those of a bacterial infection. (Coloured nasal discharge etc.)

Having writ the above, if you are already on antibiotics. Do not bin them half way through the course. Finish the course to help preclude antibiotic resistance in any mild, asymptomatic infection you may have.

...chew green cucumber and fennel seed together... indian cough remedy.

inhale steam with "Kamillosan" added...

take a hot bath and wrap up..

I found the "Chinchiao Tablet" (Chiehtupien) by Tientsin Drug Manufactory a good remedy.

these tablets are based on herbs only and are available in Chinese Pharmacies (Chinatown, Bangkok)

!!!!!!! There is a Copied product on the market - looks similar but contains caffeine and paracetamol

which the ORIGINAL Chinese Product does not!

And the Chinese Cough Syrup.... widely available in Pharmacies.. sorry forgot the name and have no bottle left..

Definitely got the virus 2 days ago but drowned it, having drunk about 2 gallons of Chi tea with ginger in the last 2 days.

I think the virus lands in your throat and multiplies from there - seem to have zapped it!

Gargle once or twice daily with luke-warm water with added salt (I use one tea-spoon of salt for half a glass of water).

Helps kill the germs. The taste is rather grim though, so afterwards I usually have a cup of hot green tea with honey. Pure honey has some antibacterial properties.

If you catch a cold, large amounts of vitamin C in whatever form are helpful. Contrary to popular belief it does not help prevent anything - it is just helpful once you've started to display symptoms.

I have something called a Neti-pot which you use to clean your sinuses with. You basically fill it with warm salty water and stick it up your nostril then tip your head to allow the water to flow through. It takes some time but eventually it comes out the other nostril, bringing with it all the loosened phlegm and whatever other nasties are lurking up there. It's uncomfortable to use but man it gives you a really clean feeling afterwards and it really helps when you have a cold or are irritated by the bad air.

I had a friend bring me one from India so I'm not sure if you can get them in CM but as it's essentially an ayurvedic product, it might be worth asking at the Chiang Mai Ayurvedic Center (053 416455) as to whether they sell them. Alternatively you could always just try using a small teapot, it might do the same job if you got the right size.

I've tried that method using a teapot - ear/throat/nose specialists back home now recommend netipots to the general public after plenty of research shows they are effective in cleaning up your sinuses and lower the rate of infections.

Takes a bit of practice and agility to use though. Maybe it's easier with a proper one.
