Hi all and thanks for some of the great info you have provided us with.

We are now on the look out for some detailed maps of Thailand but alas we can not find any!

Here in the uk you can get maps as detailed as 1:25,000 but I've seen nothing greater than 1:200,000 for Thailand, does anyone know if they are available, and if i get my hands on one am i likely to get arrested!!?? It seems some countries get a little paranoid about us seeing what goes on. Personally Id love a portable version of Google earth to take with me but thats impossible and printing them out would cost me a fortune let alone needing a troop of Sherpas to carry them for me.

Any ideas, if not then I shall map it myself! I may be some time....

thanks

Do you travel with a notebook PC?  If so, buy the ThinkNet MapMagic hard copy and CD when you get here.  Available for all of Thailand, C. Mai, and just Bangkok.

I use these often, especially if travelling to a place I've not yet been to.  Click a couple of times to enlarge the area you're looking at, put the cursor about where the destination is (you hope anyway), note the latitude and longitude off the bottom of the screen.  Then, enter the lat and long into your GPS and motor off!  It works pretty well.

Buy a GPS. They work great here and out in the boonies. I have two Garmins.

I agree the MapMagic is currently the best I have seen and very reasonably priced - it resolves to 1:5000; but there are many minor roads that are not mapped.

several options

buy a good road map - yes there are some

use a satnav, as GaryA says, but they are abt 16,000 baht though they are excellent

or try an on line map such as multimap ( google it )

I purchased an atlas about 2 or 3 years back which has been very helpful. It runs to 112 pages, cost a few hundred Bhat (400 I think) and has the whole of Thailand mapped at 1 : 1000, together with detailed street plans of many of the larger, and some not so large towns. There are 5 Atlases available, Explore Thailand ( the 1 I have), Motoring Travel Atlas of Thailand, Thailand Atlas, Thailand 51 cities Road Atlas and Road Atlas 76 cities.

They (were) available in most Thai Bookshops, but I haven't looked for a couple of years, so no guarentee.

You could try www.lotusimage.com who are listed as the distributers.

Where are you visiting?

If you need detailed maps of the main tourist destinations Bkk/Chang Mai/Hua Hin/Samui/etc; then try www.thaiwaysmagazine.com who have maps on line, and are also available at the Thai tourist office in London, but only if you ask ..... they don't put them on the shelves. These are very useful street maps, and although they are not to perfect scale, are invaluable when searching the net for a hotel/resturant/etc, as most are clearly marked, and you can see if that "peaceful little resort" just happens to be located next door to the biggest Nightclub in the area!!

If you are thinking of "comin' up norf" we have www.udonmap.com which has great maps of the local Udon Thani area, and also maps of Nong Khai and Khon Kaen.
