Carpenter/joiner In Cm?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I want to build a kind of "library" book case/shelving. This is a tad more involved than ordinary support brackets + shelves - which I have done myself many times before and will do again. Essentially, I need a sensible carpenter/joiner to fit timber uprights into a 3-metre wide space between two walls; these uprights need to have grooves cut in them (with a router) in order to accept metal inserts with multiple slots for the adjustable shelf supports. I have all the metal inserts etc - but I need to find the right person for the job. Some English language ability would be a plus, but not essential.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Hmmm....... 4 days later and my original post has had 50 hits and zero replies. Meanwhile, 3 out of the first 5 topics in the CM sub-forum are on the subject of where to find the best curry, khao soi and hamburgers - getting 1000's of hits between them............... :D

Maybe that says something about priorities here - massive emphasis on food and none on food for thought (e.g. books) ? :o

Surely somebody knows someone who knows a carpenter/joiner? Heck - I'll even stand a curry/khao soi/hamburger/pizza for anyone who can point me in the direction of someone who can do this work in the near future.

On the hang dong road going out of town past kad farang I saw a small sign on the left, pointing left, advertising a carpenter/joiner or words to that effect. It was written in English.

Vague I know but I hope it helps

No thanks on the Curry offer but if you drive up Mae Rim Road just past the 3rd ring road about 100 meters of so, there is a large lumber facility and furniture shop on the east side of the road.

They have custom made furniture and are happy to make things out of wood on order. I had my double entry doors custom made there and they came out exactly as I ordered them. Surely they could make shelves to order assuming our design doesn't have too may carved details.

The furniture store is on the south side of the entrance way and is relativiely new. The wood working shop where I ordered by custom doors is on the left as you go in. I also bought some sheet wood products there and had to almost be rude to stop them from "working" the wood as opposed to delivering it un-touched.

Good luck.

I have done a little research previously as I also want to get something made up at some stage. I came across a strong recommendation for the following company:

AOY Furniture. Ph 081-9505111 or 053 868 118

The recommendation was probably somewhere in Thai Visa but might have been somewhere else online.

If you use them I would be interested to hear how they perform.

Did you find a carpenter steve?

Hi team......................... apologies for the silence but I have been slowed down for a few days thanks to TOT upgrading their exchange equipment :o . I haven't been able to follow up the suggestions yet, but thanks a lot for all of them. It also occurs to me now that I might wander into our sponsor's store and ask them who did their cases/shelving. In any event, I'll report back on what I find/do shortly.

OK - you can all get back to talking about food again now! :D

Did you find a carpenter, Steve?

The short answer is "no". Having seen (in London) what a good carpenter can bring to the finish of a job (bookcases, custom-built closets, "monk's bench" storage etc, I would jump at the chance of repeating the process here. But - a] I'm not optimistic about getting good quality from any of the options mentioned and b] I've worked out a way to avoid using a router and still produce what I want. So, I've just splashed out for a very good jigsaw for accurate cutting and I'm going to do the job myself - just buying the timber from a good supplier (thanks, PTE). So, it'll be as good as I can make it - and nobody to blame but myself if I'm less than pleased with the result......... :o. If I am pleased, then maybe it's "have tools will travel". Oops - I was forgetting.......... no work permit.

That said, I am still amazed that nobody knows first-hand or even second-hand of a good professional carpenter in the same way that people recommend electricians etc - and who is using all those mega carpentry tools that I see for sale at HomePro, Global House etc?. All that - and yet another couple of hundred of pizza threads have started. Ulysses G - metal shelves...........?!?! :D.......... they'd never let you open a branch on Charing Cross Road in London! :D .

They look cool, last forever and no one else has them.

They would fit right in at Polk & California Streets in San Francisco or Telegraph Avenue in Berkely! :D

A tip you might not need, glue and screw gives you the most strength but the weight of the books usually controls how far laterally you can go without a support, but of course the thickness of your timber will also make a major difference although the look night be to your taste.

I once built a bookshelf unit with screws and glue and rather thin plywood, but it was so strong and indestructible because I used offset vertical between shelf supports and the thinness of the wood allowed unobtrusive vertical supports. Since shelf lumber is so much stronger in the vertical, a vertical every 2 feet or less works, especially if they are offset. You do get a very oriental look though.

Yes, amazing. More than 3 weeks ago I PM'd you and offered to put you in touch with good professional carpenters but those kind of people are busy because they are good and you said you did not want to wait a month for them to finish their current work.

Well, I shall be sending you a PM of my own, in the hope that you will extend the same offer to me.

Seems I have rubbed you up the wrong way, Bill - and apologies if I have. But, to set the record straight, you actually said "they have at least a month to finish one job that I know about and most likely more work in their book for after that. Can you wait a few months? If so, let me know and I will check with them as they are working near my house. They do not speak English."

So, "a few months" not one. Nevertheless, I was and am grateful for the offer - just that (as I said in my reply to you), it didn't fit in with the timing I had in mind. As it happens, I also had health problems and other distractions after that - hence the delay and now I am back on track again. We do what we can and TIT etc............ :D

To really set the record straight, you actually wrote " I am still amazed that nobody knows first-hand or even second-hand of a good professional carpenter in the same way that people recommend electricians etc" not that nobody knows one who can do the job as fast as I want it done.

Why does every other thread on this forum turn into a p!ssing contest?

This is one of the most informative forums on the site if not in the region but somehow testosterone, machismo and pure bloody-mindedness seems to arrive and screw up the atmosphere.

OP: sorry I have no recommendations but Bill97 does have a reputation for good advice.

I have used AOY Furniture several times over the past 10 + years. I was looking for the phone numbers so I could respond earlier (still haven't found my telephone address book though)

They have made & fitted large wooden framed mirrors, an over bar unit, a large mirror & glass fronted unit to take 50" plazma TV, decoder, hi-fi and home theatre. The remotes will work through the glass doors.

They are not cheap but their finished work is 100%

Don't speak English however with a bit of basic Thai we managed to get what was wanted.
