garmin 200 here in Thailand will run about 14k ?? With Thai ERSI maps

Thats base level car mapping..

Hi

For 1600baht more than the above, I bought a Mio520 which has the same ESRI maps with 1 yr upgrades, wide screen, easy to switch between Thai/Engrish spoken instructions and Blutooth (the BIB are hotting up on phone use when driving now). I got mine locally but they are available in Pantip,BKK and I am very pleased with it.

How easy/difficult/expensive is it to change the country maps if you are travelling to different places?

Thanks.

Depends which country you want to go to.

UK, Spain, Malaysia?

For the UK my solution was to buy a Garmin in the UK and then add Thai maps, then it worked out cheaper than just buying the same unit here.

Prices have changed so I'm not sure if its still possible to do that and save money but the price of the Thai maps has reduced substantially.

For Europe , I haven't pursued a legal method.

For Singapore and Malaysia you can get the maps for free from MalSing gps web site do a google , its quite easy.

The Nuki 250w with full Euro mapping is only about 120 GBP from amazon.co.uk..

Then add Thai maps and Malay maps would look to be the cheapest way to skin that particular multi region cat !!

I have a Street Pilot 2610. It is no longer made but you can still buy new ones off eBay. By the time I paid shipping and the Thai tax I had about $300 US invested. I bought the Rotweiler maps and unfortunately there were a lot of glitches. Since I really like the unit, I had Gadget Trend install the ESRI map on a new CF one gig memory card. The card including the newest map cost 7,500 baht. Gadget Trend still sells the 2610 for 35,900 baht so I have about half that price in mine. It works great.

Percy the Nuvi 200 only has a slider on the top right, slide to left for on and slide right for off, but it doesn't go off.

Sorry , I was being facetious.

I'd say there are 4 alternatives.

1. Unplug it until the battery runs out.

2. Open it up and figure out why its not working , for this you would need some knowledge and tools.

3. Take it back to the shop.

4. Ignore the problem.

Personally I'd go with option 2 or 4 , I have a C510 sat in my car now that has been switched off once in about 2 years and then it was to replace the non replaceable battery. I find it doesn't lose satellite's signal if it stays on even when parked inside so its always ready to use. It can be infuriating waiting for it to find enough satellites on cloudy / hazy days. I know that this will reduce the screen life but if I get another couple of years out of it I will be ready for a new toy.

It was nearly fully charged but I just plugged it into the computer to charge some more and then pulled the usb cable out and it shut down so seems to have solved the small problem.
