By when do I have to hand in my work permit to the Ministry of Labor after resigning from a teaching job? What documents do I have to bring with me besides the work permit and my passport? Replies appreciated.

It is up to you when you return your work permit. However, u will be fined 2,000 baht if not on the same day as your last day and 500baht for each day after the first four days. U need to bring with u a letter from your employer confirming your leaving and the date. U will be told to immediately leave Thailand, however, u can buy the 7 day extension visa for 1,900 baht. Yes, this is no longer provided free of charge. Everything is done at suan plu and expect to wait so get their early.

Thanks for replying. I've just been informed that there have been changes since the new government but no one quite knows what they are, including the officer who took the phone inquiry. Has anyone else heard anything?

Really? So if you lose your job at 6pm, you are supposed to be on a plane out of Thailand before midnight if you don't pay the extra 1900 baht? That seems even extreme for Thailand.

You need to return your work permit as soon as you can, next day is best but you have 7 days to return it after leaving a job ( the employer also must notify them within this time ).

You do NOT need to leave Thailand unless your Visa is expired. your work permit normally follows your permitted to stay date, so unless your visa is up on the same day you leave your job you have time to decide what you will do next.

You need to leave Thailand within 7 days if you are on an extension of stay for employment. If you are on a visa entry (90 day) you can stay until the permitted to stay until date.

My last day in my previous job was on Friday February 29th. I left my passport and work permit with the company and they went to the BOI one-stop-service centre on Monday March 3th. I got my passport back on Tuesday 4th with a stamp that I had to leave the country on or before the 6th. So they counted my last day at work as the first day of the 7-day period. Do not know whether the company had to pay for the stamp. They did not charge me. Went to Ranong on the 6th and got 90 days based on my "old" multiple entry non imm. B visa that expires on March 22nd. Had it been after this date I would have been given a 30-day visa exempt stamp only.

So be careful to count the 7 days to sort things out with your last day at work being day number 1.

Thanks for all your feedback. I'm afraid Junglejumbo might be right, judging from my friend's experience last week. He reported 6 days after his last day at work and was asked to pay 3000 baht in fines.

For the WP sure 7 days to return it to the ministry of labor. After 7 days you have to go to a police station have to pay a fine!

As you are holding a visa, you can utilize it till it's (last) expiry stamp. ( I am not sure about the legality of this!)

Then you will have to get a new Visa!
