Bangkok Mayor Turns Attention To Air Pollution

Bangkok mayor turns attention to air pollution

BANGKOK: -- The new Bangkok Mayor, Apirak Kosayothin, has launched a campaign to clean up Bangkok's air pollution caused by carbon monoxide.

Ten road junctions have been designated as crisis spots that need immediate and tough measures to clean up the air, he said.

Most of these junctions are in the city's business areas where major traffic congestion often occurs, including Klong Toey, Mansri, Sukhumvit and On-nuch.

The municipal authorities will ask government agencies, like the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority which owns several thousand buses, to check and improve the conditions of their engines to reduce carbon monoxide emissions.

Exhaust emissions from more than half the city's cars are reportedly above the permitted standard.

if they tune-up the buses that will make a great improvement,

but the zillions of 2 stroke motorcycles will always be a problem.

underneath the siam skytrain station is one spot that has a severe problem.

getting people to overhaul and maintain the desiel engines would not only help air polution it would save on fuel costs and subsidies.

and to remove the two-stroke motocycles you need something just as cheap to replace them.

maybe thailand should attempt to get the rights to manufacture these

Seems strange that they are talking about Carbon Monoxide - which I have not often referred to as a problem in vehicle emmissions.

Especially as carbon monoxide is odourless...its only of concern in indoor areas with no ventilation.

Dust is just as bad.........my place has louvre windows and even when closed the place is coated with dust one day after cleaning it. Not just a slight film but a real coating......slap the bed and a cloud rises !!

Biodiesel would be a huge improvement, too.... The most you'd have to do is to replace the fuel lines - and you only have to do that is the vehicle in question is older than 1985. It'll mix with petroleum diesel in any quantity, and runs 4 times cleaner than the most effiecient fuel cell technology out there. And you can make it out of any type of vegatable matter. (Heck - you might even be able to make it out of those extra chickens... :o )

There are devices you can slap on the exhaust pipes of the diesels to remove all the large particulates from coming out of those busses, too...

Using food to propel a vehicle is a foolish notion to begin with...

Bio fuels are not an improvement nor are they a suitable alternte for petroleum fuels. The bio fuels either cause or attract water condensation... engines run poorly and can be ruined. They are more expensive to refine and the market costs reflect a false value as they are heavily subsidized by gov'ts (other people's money).

Certainly an upgrade is necessary for mass transit vehicles - buses and vans - most definitely the motorcycles. There are always costs associated with improvements but they are worthwhile.

Window dressing in light of the recent climate change event here.

Want to remove pollution? Easy - remove the causes of it.

Then again, not sure why we are quoting an article dated 2004. But I suspect the problem hasnt improved since then. :)

FM505 went digging for this one...
