I live in Thailand. I had a job with a work permit before but now I don’t. I want to keep living here for a few years. That means I have to change my visa.

I went to KL and got a 3 month tourist Visa for Thailand. Can do that again and keep doing it indefinitely?

Sunbelt recommended I go to Australia with their sponsorship letter to get 1 year. I can do that, but I rather go to KL every 3 months if possible.

BTW, I am 29 year old Canadian.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Again another guy caught in the never ending Thailand Tourist Visa problem. You used to work here and now want to simply live here but your limited to Tourist visas and at some stage they will tell you that you are not a Tourist (which is true) but the options are so limited and in my opinion stupid.

If you have even a small amount of money then you will probably pay more in VAT and other tax than an average Thai person over 12 months and that money however small, goes into the government, however they don't want you to stay here, you cant vote, and there is no real way to simply live here because you want to (I know there are, but you get my point).

In my personal opinion, I would follow Sunbelts advice and then that way at least you know that your safe for a year which gives you loads of time to explore the other alternatives to either being a long stay tourist or having to get a business Visa that you don't really need.

Sunbelt has great Thai consular contacts around the world. In Australia Brisbane offers a while you wait visa service.

You should study Thai, this will improve your life here and also you can get ED visa, no problem with staying in the country.

Thanks guys. This really helps. Sounds like I should avoid consecutive tourist visas. Don't want to get stuck in Malaysia while I got everything I own in an apartment in BKK.

I guess I will have to get the Non Immigrant Visa in Australia, with sponsorship from Sunbelt.

Or that is another option. Actually, that sounds really cool. Do you know where I can find more information about learning Thai and getting an ED visa with that? Any idea how much time I would have to spend learning?

I think I'm right in saying you can get a one year non imm o ED visa extended for a further year as well, thereby giving you 2 years.

As to the original question, can you have consecutive TVs? Do you need to go to different embassies, or will the same one each time be ok?

For a Thai language school, usually you are given a 3 month visa, you can then take paperwork that the school gives you and extend your visa for 1900 baht every 3 months. This is to make sure that you are really attending the school.

Yes you can get many TVs in a row. Some consulates will give double entries (Vientiane), some require you show them a ticket to your home country (Penang), and others require whatever they feel like asking for. You can mix it up by going to different consulates each time, or you can just keep going to one until they deny you, and then go to another. Right now, it looks like Vientiane is probably the best bet in the region, and you could probably get a double entry.

walen is an alternative <derogatory comment removed>

there are other alternatives such as Tammasat university you can get a years study for about 17 thousand baht with all yout health insurance etc included.

also check out ramkamhaeng university which is a lot cheaper.Friends have told me of other courses they have obtained for a lot less than that maybe 10 thousand or so, but unfortunately i dont have the info on that right now.

I did a course in walen which they promised me a whole year visa.

Once at immmigration in Malaysia though, i recieved only multiple entry (4 times 3 months), i complained at walen and they were good enough to refund my money, so i have to say they are honest in that respect.

A multiple-entry non-immigrant visa, valid for an unlimited number of journeys to Thailand (not limited to four journeys) within one year from its date of issue is in fact what is commonly referred to as a “1-year visa”. The alternative would have been a single-entry non-ED visa, followed by extensions of stay every 90 days.

I don't think they would do this. I think that they would, at the very least, issue you a transit visa rather than a tourist, at which point you could go back to your apartment in BKK and prepare to leave, or maybe go to another consulate in a different country next time.

This also sounds like a good idea, and something which I have been considering off and on. It would advantage me in the reasoning that it will help me to do business in Thailand later (i.e. own my own company or franchise location), or teach.

Hi Pickle,

We have had good experience with Calan language school in Sukhumvit for some of our staff. They do both Thai learning and english learning. And affordable to.

Callan and Walen are sister schools, both give assistance with obtaining ED visas. Both are located in the same place in Times Square and soon in Pattaya as well.

There are many language schools in BKK with good comments and reputation. You can speak Thai in 6 to 12 months. And have your visa done from the help of the language school.

good luck!

Well guys, thanks for the replies.

Thamasat sounds nice, especially with the insurance.

I ended up applying at Walen because it is closer to my home and probably smaller classes. Still waiting for the word back and then gotta leave the country to get the ED Visa.

Hopefully everything works out.

There is no such thing as a 3 month Tourist Visa.

The Tourist Visa is for 2 month, with a possible extension.

The Non Imm visa is for 3 months.

Back to back Tourist Visas is becoming very difficult, so I do

suggest you follow SunBelt's advice.
