Must admit crossing 2nd Road can be a death trap and I have crossed the road many times. The answer to crossing is to be patient. Take your time and there will always be a gap in the traffic giving enough comfortable time to cross. But most pedestrians are in the same hurry that the cars, bikes and trucks etc are in hence the main problem.

Normally the only way there is a gap in the traffic is because some poor s0d has been knocked down (up stream) or if the traffic is stationary then some poor s0d has been knocked down further down 2nd road.

as defined by s0ds law.

The smart ones have given up trying to cross, and the dumb ones........well........they don't have to worry about it any more (d@mn annoying having to scrap farang off my bumper almost every night, especially as it seems to happen right after a fresh wash and wax).

I still think the safest way is to take a taxi/baht bus. Or hire a squad of suicidal locals to run out and block traffic while you cross (depending on how busy it is, you may need anywhere from a squad to a platoon full of reincarnation seekers for each crossing) !

Also, the time share condo folks on the motorbikes add to the already dangerous situation by running people down as they try to walk down the sidewalks or cross the roads.

The motorbikes are the problem, swerving all over the place, most baht bus do actually slow down a fraction when you are crossing. But I sincerely believe that Italy is worse. My experiences crossing the roads there were hellish.

A much simpler solution would be to equip some of the fine officers

of Mr. Colov's special falang police unit with huge fluorescent traffic lollipops,

they could then help people across second road and offer a valuable service to the community.

Sure is better than grouping on the Sukhumvit trying to 'nick' people for no insurance.....

On a slow night for cheap entertainment, watch a STREET DOG cross a busy road. I see this more on Pattaya Tai than 2nd Road, maybe 2nd road is even too much for the dogs. What is funny about the dogs is that they cross like farangs! They are cautious, tentative, aware. They wait for an opening. Often, you will see them run back. Thais of course just tend to push into it no matter what. I am becoming more Thai about it, but just a little.

Think First! Find a safe place to cross, then stop

It is safer using a subway, a footbridge, an island, a zebra, pelican, toucan or puffin crossing, or where there is a police officer, a school crossing patrol or a traffic warden. Where there is a crossing nearby, use it. Otherwise choose a place where you can see clearly in all directions.

Try to avoid crossing between parked cars. Move to a space where drivers can see you clearly.

Stop just before you get to the kerb

Position yourself so that you can see if anything is coming. Do not get too close to the traffic. If there is no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road but make sure you can still see approaching traffic.

Look all around for traffic and listen

Traffic could come from any direction. Also listen, because you can sometimes hear traffic before you see it.

If traffic is coming, let it pass

Look all around again and listen. Do not cross until there is a safe gap in the traffic and you are certain that there is plenty of time.

Remember, even if traffic is a long way off, it may be approaching very quickly.

When it is safe walk straight across the road - do not run

Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross, in case there is any traffic you did not see, or in case other traffic suddenly appears.

T.I.P. (This Is Pattaya) not some little community with nice white picket fences and people who know (and obey) the traffic laws !

For Pattaya, the last hedgehog icon should have shown the critter flattened like a pancake (on 2nd Road of course).

Actually it's very simple.Have you ever noticed that whenever you crossing a road the upcoming motorbikes will always move to the direction you are walking.Trick is to make them confused.
