Strictly speaking, glutamate is not MSG. MSG is the salt form of glutamate. Info also from www.msg.org.au.

Like many foods glutamate is produced through fermentation, a process used in making beer, vinegar, soy sauce and yogurt. The process begins with natural products such as molasses from sugar cane or sugar beets and food starch from tapioca or cereals which are fermented in a controlled environment with a micro-organism (Corynebacterium glutamicum).

The crude glutamic acid produced in this process is then filtered, purified and converted by neutralisation into monosodium glutamate. After additional purification, crystallisation, drying and sieving, monosodium glutamate has the form of pure white crystals ready for packing and use.

Well, MSG is part of your food chain - the moment you use a stock cube or any of the above mentioned, but the ype of it being bad for you is based on totally wrong facts - Glutamate is contained in just about every food item and if it wasn't, it wouldn't taste good. Initially Glutamate was derived from seeweat by the Japanese see also http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/food/s...1614469,00.html - Thai food by the way, contains a LOT of MSG. People who think they are allergic to it, have eaten it nearly every day without knowing and only develop any headaches if they are told. Well, there may be the odd case of someone who is really allergic to Glutamate but than they can't eat any normal food because its part of most natural food.

Its usually decribed as "Yeast" extract on the packaging.

We do not add it in our products because its already there naturally and by making sausages with lots of meat instead of water, we do not need to add MSG. The same with our ready cooked meals in Jars, we make our own stock with bones as one used to do and some top restaurants still do. It enhances the naturally occuring glutamate and creates the "unami" or meaty flavor. So does slow roasting.

By the way, if you would read the scientific names of most food items, herbs and spices, they sound scary. How about 5-(2,4-dioxymethylene-phenyl)-hexa-2,4-dienoic acid (piperinic acid) with azinane - the part of black pepper that gives it the punch or S. officinalis ssp. minor) contains mostly thujone (35 to 60%), 1,8-cineol (15%), camphor (18%), borneol (16%), bornyl esters, α-pinene and salvene for your sage in your sausages - Monosodium is SALT

Yeah ^^^ Give something it's scientific name and everyone goes in to a panic, although the sometimes excessive amounts used are a worry (from a sodium point of view).

Remember the kefuffle over Di-hydrogen monoxide in food? (try a Google or look here http://www.dhmo.org/ ).

Thanks much JohnBKKK.

Just as I always suspected! :o

So how come Vegemite tastes like the nectar of the Gods and Marmite like the final emission of a dying donkey?

I assume that was the type of post you were trying to attract General?

It has been a bit quiet with Bill away. :D :D

Actually, I was trying freak out all the neurotic MSG paranoids who LOVE Marmite/Vegemite and will not be able to cut it from their diet, but your post was fun too! :o

Sorry hate to be a dissenter but you seem to have those two reversed Marmite is definitely the nectar of the Gods and Vegemite somewhat lower on the ladder.....IMHO

After eating pies etc on several occasions, and on another occasion, the chinese neighbour's cooking, which both, probably, contained MSG,there seems to be a facial expression indicating mental illnesssad.gif, when waking up on the next day or two, and which is FELT also as the same feeling on the facesad.gif.

And so a feeling of ugly tension,and/or tiredness physically and mentally,a type of mental illness,or disturbanceannoyed.gif.

The similar sad, mentally ill annoyed.giffeeling, and behaving so, that happens also after smoking dope.

Very strange and unpleasant effects.

No more MSG thanks.

Damaged or killed brain cells, from the excitotoxin?Probably.

Brain cells excited to the point of mental illness?

Brain cells, and all bodily cells, excited to the point of fatigue?

Or a combination of the effects of grains, transfats etc and MSG?

Unfortunately,no photos/images of the facial effects, which might not show up on screen anyway, due to being maybe not obvious enough for a camera to record.

Search the mercola website for his MSG newsletters.

In the mercola website links, scroll down to the lists of ingredients which have hidden MSG.

Synthetic MSG might be a lot worse than natural MSG,maybe because of synthetic amounts added,and/or synthetic types.

What a bunch of rectally expelled digested solid waste!

<deleted> is "synthetic MSG"? And to that point, <deleted> would "natural MSG" be? Is there a difference between synthetic H2O and natural H2O?

My only hope in posting this is serve fair warning to those who might be confused or tempted to believe this nonsense. While DurianIsland might be a nice and decent person, his post is full of irrational, unscientific BS!

"Damaged or killed brain cells, from the excitotoxin?Probably." <------- Really? Really????? WOW! SCARRRRYYYYY!

MSG kills brain cells - just look at the brain power of the average person who rants on about such a banal thing as vegamite. Where are they from? Are they generally thick as a dockers sandwich!

I think I could do with killing a few braincells. I think far too much for my own good. Im presently tucking into a bowl of msg laden mama noodles...which i actually eat quite regularly. Im doomed...DOOMED! :)

Oh edit: Marmite is better. :D
