My (Thai) wife and I are expecting our second child very soon and she has expressed the desire to have, following the birth, what I can only describe as, a traditional Thai sauna.

I've never seen it myself but from what I've heard the mother (post birth) sits in some kind of cubical which is very hot and breaths in the steamy atmosphere (made up of traditional herbs). It is supposedly very good for getting the body back in shape.

Has anyone heard of this? My wife thinks there's a company that delivers these things to your home, but I've never heard of them. If anyone has an experience of this or any information I would love to hear it......

Cheers

I can only confirm that it is very nice. Different from a traditional sauna, but I like it. They have an enormous (like 3 meter high) tea-kettle filled with herbs and water, and let the steam into a small room where we sit and relax. I introduced the concept of drinking beer during the sauna ceremony, and this has become very popular. Probably a man thing.

It does wonders for your respiratory system, and is very refreshing.

its a woman thing; used to be a fire built under the woman's bed, kept stoked, and she didnt leave with the baby for a week or so... its an issaan thing...with herbs, for protecting the baby, keeping the womb warm, etc.

someone once said that they can be ordered to houses for those that are city people.... look in the issaan thread weve discussed it a million times also... try reading the one called barbecue people or somthing... cant remember the oringinal name of the thread....

oh, its dry and smokey when they do it in issaan, not sure if steamy....

why dont u have her give u the name in thai and then u can google it... there is tons of stuff for mother/baby in thai on the net

in the central region they have a wooden baskets (like for keeping chics) which are covered by sorongs. Under the basket there is a clay charcoal cooker with a pot filled with water and herbs - fresh one are the best, the most aromathic. Thai sauna is low temperature - some 45 celsius. Easy to run, even several times per day

You can buy those at Lotus or Big C.

It's a square tent look alike box with a modified electrical rice cooker inside. The thai lady places her body in a sitting position from the neck and down inside and zip it closed, the steam from the rice cooker makes the hot sauna steam. Add additional herbs and sents.

According to the thai ladies this is the way to go for releasing all the troubles from labor and pregnancy.

Can be bought from TV shop as well, not the Thai Visa shop, but the television shop. :o
