This service is needed for a Thai national not a farang. Does anyone know of an agency that provides debt management counseling in Thailand? This would be up north around Ubon Ratchithani.

thanks in advance!

Was going to suggest the services of our very own debt counsellor on TV, Heng, who I'm sure would provide a confidential and sympathetic hearing for your client and give sage advice. He may even be able to restructure his/her debts into a single package at a preferential rate of interest, guaranteed to be below 20 % per month. However, not sure if he'll want to travel all the way to Ubon (NE Thailand), so can your client make it to Bangkok?

Over to you Heng.......... :o

Clearly the subprime crisis has spread to Ubon.

Is there no end to the madness?

More seriously....there are some government banks and whatever; if not protests and pleas to PPP should be enough.

I don't read Thai very well, but I'm told these websites and/or organizations may be able to help:

1. http://www.consumerthai.org/compliant_boar...ew.php?id=10152

2. http://www.consumerthai.org/debt_club/index.php?

3. http://www.consumerthai.org/

4. http://pha.narak.com/topic.php?No=12523

5. http://www.creditde.com/Tip&Tec09.htm

6. http://www.thailawyer.net/surapolhk/law.htm

Also, as you're in Ubon Ratchathani, you might want to check if Dr. Mechai Viravaidya's Population and Development Agency (PDA) has set up a Village Development Bank in your area. These Village Banks provide microfiance funding to members for business borrowing. The PDA says it also provides "forced-savings" mechanisms for its members, and training on business start-ups (for cottage businesses) Members of Village Banks also can receive voluntary personal finance and debt management training. http://www.pda.or.th/eng/index.asp

Thanks Plachon, I was wondering where Ubon was. I had heard it was part of Thailand. 1% is the going rate by the way, but you need to have it secured with land or built on property (and don't even talk to me unless it's roadside... and that's road as in 2-8 lanes, not gravel or dirt). Anyhoo, here goes...

1. Spend less than you make.

2. Save and invest.

3. Buy low and sell high.

:D

Hey Heng, good plain advice for starters. You should think about opening a Citizen's Advice Bureau in the neighbourhood. :D And nice to see there's no need to blame the debtee's plight on being a poor, ignorant ban nawk bumpkin and the interest rates are a lot kinder these days as well! Soon you'll be giving the stuff away if you come any lower than 12 % pa (did I get that right?) :D

PS The geography lesson was for the OP, not you, as I figured you should know the location of many of your client's home provinces by now. :D
