It's clear you don't know a lot about guns..........................never held/fired an automatic, eh? You just take it off safety........

have been known just to wake up in a bad mood, or just forget who they are for 10 seconds, and rip a child to pieces. I could never take that chance. These animals aren't banned in several countries for nothing. I'm not insinuating you shouldn't have one, if they're legal, just wouldn't fancy it myself.

The action of the dog is typically a reflection of the owner. Moody Pits are normally neglected or have been couped up for too long. If you watch Animal Planet enough you are bound to see the "Houston Animal Cops" show. Always, it seems, that the one animal that is the star of the show is your everyday average run of the mill garage pit bull that no one loved, they just bred for sport fighting. If Child Soldiers can be taught to fire AK-47's, then a dog can be taught to do most anything.

Earlier you described a pitt bull that savaged another dog, took 6 bullets, had it's throat cut and was then thrown in to a bayou (can you tell me what one of those is please) and was still up for a fight!! If that isn't enough to give me nightmares tonight I don't know what is. My point is that your dog at home, is exactly the same as that dog, because it's had the same hundreds of years of breading that make them both genetically savage hunting, killing machines. All you are doing when you give your dog, a lovely, caring home is suppressing those urges, but you will never remove them completely. I would rather come face to face with an angry bloke, 6' 5" tall and with a bat in his hand, than come across an angry pitt bull. With the dog it's pure instinct, there's no reasoning, no logic, just the instinctive urge to kill. Maybe I'm being a tart, but that gives me the willies. I'm not trying to piss you off, because obviously this is your baby I'm talking about, and the chance of it ever doing anything wrong is minuscule, I just think if you believe there isn't even a 1% chance of your dog biting someone one day, then you're not being realistic.

P.S As you are a huge dog lover, I must admit, I find it quite strange you would go hunting with your cousins, knowing there is a chance one of the dogs may need to be shot and have it's throat slit, I can't see Barbara Woodhouse enjoying that very much!!

I think your missing the point of dog training and dog psychology (and when owning a dog that is more dangerous it is much more important to understand dogs social minds).. But this isnt about just giving a dog a loving home, in fact even though dogs benefit massively from happy loving environments I think it plays far less of a point that the fact of letting the dog know its hierachical place within the home.

A dog is a pack animal and in thier heads they have to be slightly dominated and controlled, a dog that doesnt have it clear in his head who is the master is a dangerous dog and that could be any small or midsize one too.. When a dog sees you (and by extension the other humans in its household that it is bonded to) as the pack leader they then work hard to please you, thats how dog minds and social structures work, the dog needs to have some respect (I dont want to use the word fear as its not necessary to be harmful to a dog, but he HAS to know who is boss).. A well adjusted dog, who is bonded to its owner and thier family, who knows his place in the household, is a happy dog. And a happy (well balanced) dog will not be one to bite or attack its pack seniors.

I really miss my old mutt, and have always been a dog person, but its important if your going to have one to really spend time with them, have them bonded to you, understand how thier pack animal minds work and how dog social groups relate.. I guess its fair to say some breeds are not for novice owners.

Friend of mine awoke early hours of this morning to find someone rummaging around in his room. He told me he ran out to get something to defend himself with if the burglar had a gun/knife.

Thing is, I have two very ferocious dogs which I keep inside the house, for fear of poisoning (three dogs poisoned this week adjacent soi) :o Not a murmur from them! 'Come in, chern chern'. Found friend holding tightly onto closed door of his room holding a gardening implement. I called the police, who I have to say, impressively arrived very promptly, three of them, guns at the ready a la American cop style movie, burst open the door, and of course, nothing.

Almost every house in the area has had a break-in recently. So be on your guard.

All this relative affluence next to all the poverty here really taking it's toll now? Or do small Thai villages/towns have the same problems? Wouldn't have thought on such a large scale, more closely knit?. Most of the farang around here barely speak to one another :D

If a farang has an unregistered, unlicensed firearm and shoots a burglar dead, does anyone know the consequences? Cops lockup farang? Ousted, persona non-grata?

Or, if unregistered, unlicensed firearm used is no longer around (ditched in the klong) what would happen?

Interesting questions. I'll just expand a little bit by asking what if a farang used another weapon (baseball bat, sword etc.) to kill a burglar?

If you're married to a Thai & the guns registered in her name, obviously you'd tell the police she pulled the trigger.

BRAVE BRIT CHASES AFTER BURGLARS AFTER DAYLIGHT ROBBERY

After discovering two Thai thieves attempting to rifle his house safe on 21 Jan 08 in Mabprachan, who subsequently attacked him with an axe, British national, John Jones gave chase to their fleeing motorbike in his pickup truck, killing one while the other two escaped.

On 21 Jan 08, at 4.10 pm, Police Lieutenant Colonel Tanadatch Doungta Piyachai, Inspector of Banglamung Police was notified that three people had broken into a house at no. 15 /110 Moo.4, Nongprue, Banglamung. The three men had also apparently attacked the foreign house owner. The house owner had attempted to fight back and when the thieves ran outside and tried to escape on their motorbile, chased after them in a pickup truck, running over and killing one of the thieves, but the other two managed to escape. The incident took place on the road to Mabprachan Reservoir, off Sukhumvit.

This has not got much to do with Phuket, but has for this thread.

So did the Brit get charged for running over the Thai burglar or what happened there?

If I was a Thai woman I would not marry you & would feel sorry for anyone that has already.

Put the gun in her hands, and point the finger.

Sham on you.. You obviously don't know the law - as another poster has said, if a burglar is on your property then a Thai national with a licensed firearm is quite within their rights to nail them. My Wife wouldn't do this, but I would, so in a sense we'd be doing each other a favour. As a farang, I'm not sure I'd risk taking credit for it, but I'll ask the question of a copper who I know next time I see him.

I think the OP has moved on, and now this is a number of topics, so I will try to be precise.

Guns are not the best answer. Especially if both of you have one. My father told me once that anyone can fire a gun at someone, but try doing it when they are firing back. I mean, if you're Dirty Harry, and have experience in gun fights, then by all means, but get real?

Just the process of getting it ready to fire at a moments notice... Not difficult at all, especially if it's already loaded, as Huggybear said, just take it off safety. I mean, the last few posts, the guy said he was naked :D with a meat cleaver. Naked?

If a noise is heard, my dog will wimper and nudge me. All I have to do is open the bedroom door, and then shut and lock it and call the police. She will sort out whatever needs to be sorted, while I am in my room behind a locked door. Thanks, but I'll take my chance with the Smith & Wesson. If the criminal is armed, capable & determined the dogs toast anyway, irrespective of breed, though it'll certainly make it easier for you to deliver the coup de grace if he's preoccupied with the pit bull.

By all means, Sirpico :o , if you want a gun, there are plenty of them out there, but why get involved. Let the dog sort it out. Who knows, you might just shoot yourself in the willy trying to cock it, and then what would the Topic be?

How to not shoot yourself in the Willy :D while loading and cocking your gun to shoot at a person who is not supposed to be in your house?

I was not designed to take criminals on head on, but my dog dam_n sure was :D . That's your preference & if you don't feel confident with guns, perhaps a wise one.

I wish I could meet someone who has had there house broken into, and let them get to know my dog, and maybe let her spend a few nights over there. She will sell the idea herself. My last dog died almost five years ago & I said I'd never get another, so far I've stuck to my word - they take too much looking after.

GET A BADA$ DOG!. And leave the guns to the cowboys :D . Guns and electric fences require less maintenance than dogs.

To Huggy and Clayton,

I take your comments as schovanistic, regardless of how you meant them.

I am a girl, but I have used guns. Shotguns, Handguns, and High Powered Rifles. My cousins are all gun hounds.

You use your gun and I'll keep what I have.

Funny, no one ever comes over uninvited.

Try not to shoot yourself in the willy.

I am a girl, but I have used guns. Shotguns, Handguns, and High Powered Rifles. Your original comments would suggest otherwise. My cousins are all gun hounds.

You use your gun and I'll keep what I have. I will.

Funny, no one ever comes over uninvited. One should never tempt fate.

Try not to shoot yourself in the willy. Be careful that your pitbull doesn't turn on you, or more importantly, someone who is invited.

Don't care how you took the comments Amanda as your post regarding guns was very naive. You actually think you have time to load and cock a gun while a burglar is already in the house? The statements were just very inexperienced sounding...

What I am curious about is your continued reference to "shooting yourself in the willy". Typically it is "don't shoot yourself in the foot" which has double entendre, cliche if you will. Your statements (having studied some psychology) suggest a Freudian frustration with male genitalia. "Don't shoot your tool off" HA! Definite frustration there.
