Hey,

Myself and the boyf are heading to Kuala Lumpur for the wknd (i needed to get my visa stamped) and was wandering if anyone had any 'must do's' whilst we are there. We are only going to be there a short time and are staying 5 mins from the City centre so wanted to know what would be really good to see/do whilst we were there.

Info much appreciated

Cheers

For a short stay and if the weather is good the KL tower provides the best views over the city plus a 58 second 281 meter elevator ride. There is a rotating restaurant up there but booking is essential and, from what I've heard, the food is not up to much anyway.

At the base of the tower is a piece of preserved jungle (forest) with walks around and a bit of wildlife (monkeys). Worth a wander but it can, and does, get very sticky if it is just after the rain.

I wouldn't bother with the Petronas towers skybridge tour, it's limited in numbers so you have got to get there early, nowhere near as high as the tower and you can only see two directions.

Chinatown (Petaling street) is worth a visit for street market style shopping but make sure all your valuables are out of site and you have your bag securely over your shoulder. Snatch thieves are common in just about all of KL.

The area around Merdeka square is worth a visit as there are some beautiful colonial style buildings.

Going up Jalan Bukit Bintang away from Lot 10 shopping mall, passing under the KLM, you come across Changkat Bukit Bintang about 100 yards on the right. Go a little way down there and off to the left is Jalan Alor where there are some interesting ethnic restaurants. If you carry on down C. Bukit Bintang a little way there is quite a good Thai restaurant on the right hand side. Nothing much to look at but the food is OK.

Asian Heritage Row, Jalan Doraisamy, is THE place to go for nightlife (nor naughty nightlife) and there are plenty of restaurants and clubs offering all sorts of food and music. Beware it is expensive to go clubbing in KL and nobody goes out much before 11pm. Most bars have happy hours which are well worth taking advantage of but they end 9 - 10pm.

btw watch the taxi drivers. Most are good guys and provide a good service but, as with everywhere, there are bad apples. During the day most will go straight onto the meter without being asked, but nightime it is a different story and you often end up negotiating a lump sum fare.

Although I assume things have changed somewhat since I lived there (left in 1999) the favourite haunts then (nightlife) were Bangsar and Damansara. But if you wish to stay around town, the Golden Triangle used to be the place to be. BTW, KL is not cheap!

For daytime, the Lake Garden is worth a short visit (head up Jalan Parlimen).

Lake Garden, KL

Other than that I agree with Phil who appears to have spent time there since I left.

Been to KUL many times myself for visa related matters. For a capitol city in Asia, there's really not much to do there. My last trip, I stayed at the Trader's Shangri La Hotel right in the center of town and across from Petronas Towers and barely left my room for 3 days it's so boring in KUL (just caught up on my reading and surfed the net. The shopping center at the base of the Petronas Towers are fine if that's your thing. Also, lots of restos there. Lots of cheap street/hawker food around the Lot 10 area shopping centers.

If you like classical music, check out what's playing at the Dewan Philharmonic Hall in the Petronas Towers. This is really a beautiful concert venue and prices are cheap by Western standards. Sorry can't be more helpful.

KL is pretty boring after a day or two.

I stay at a backpackers in Bukit Bintang, preferred, or Chow Kit, (cowshit) area, close to stations.

The comment earlier about taxis, yeah, buyer beware.

If you arrive at SENTRAL Station, go up to the taxi rank, to get a taxi, you will be given a chit, pay what is on the chit.

On my return, a taxi driver wanted 3 times as much, "Git lost," I told him.

Just back from KL where I watched the Formula 1 race, I would recommend a nice bar with good live music, mostly Salsa, and some funny barkeepers. It's called "QBa" and is in the groundfloor of the Westin Hotel.
