I Can't Find This Type Of Mobile Phone ..?

Ok Ive searched and searched all over the internet, Ive been to web sites, forums, you name it ive been there , but as of yet no luck. The thing I am looking for is a mobile phone ( any brand ) that has the EDGE option, and an external antenna connection on the phone. Where I live the phone signal is not so good .

But if a mobile phone is connected to an external roof mounted antenna , the signal is full. I live out in the sticks , so first I would like to see the phones specification before I make the trip to the big city to buy a phone. So any one know a (recent model if possible) mobile phone that has EDGE and an external antenna connection (socket ) on the phone..? , Ive looked at an external antenna mobile phone cradle , which you sit the phone in and the cradle is connected to the external antenna, the only problem with this type of connection is it seems not to transfer a full signal to the phone, so a direct plug in connection is better.

Thanks

May you check with Siemens phones because they had Antenna connectors in the past, I still have one of that Connectors. But I don't know Siemens can work with GPRS/EDGE.

Cheers.

I often work out in the sticks and notice in one place I went, the islands off East Madura, Indonesia, they use GSM extension antennas that fit any mobile phone. It's just a coaxial cable to a rooftop antenna leading into the home. At the phone end is simply a flexible rap around cup holder. Placing any phone in the holder increases the GSM signal strength. Haven't seen this used in Thailand however, but I have never got that far off the beaten track.

Thanks for the info, ... Digitalbanana , at the moment I have a simple mobile phone ( Non EDGE ) and its connected to my external roof antenna , the coaxil

comes down from the antenna and plugs directly into my phone, with this type of direct connection the signal strength is full at 4 bars. Ive have tried in the past a flexible rap around cup holder type connection connected to my external roof antenna, the signal strength with type of conector was 2 bars signal. so for me in this area it looks as if a direct connection to the phone gives a better signal strength.

Topdogger , thanks for your comment I has also been looking for an USB EDGE modem thats got the option to connect an external antenna to it, but again ive not been able to find one so far, can you please tell me which model / make you have ..?

Thanks

Thanks Topdogger, just looked at specification for the Solomon SEGM-520 EDGE..

The Solomon SEGM-520 is a Plug-and Play, compact, light-weight, wireless modem that provides EDGE, GPRS connectivity for laptop PC. On an EDGE network, Solomon SEGM-520 enable connection to the Internet to browse the Internet, send and receive emails, communicate by instant message or SMS its data speeds max up to 384Kbps. Connect Anytime, Anywhere!

  • Quad-band radio card suitable for use on EGRPS/GPRS/GSM networks worldwide
  • EGRPS up to 384 kbps high-speed data performance, GPRS/GSM data speeds to 85.6 kbps (Network dependent)
  • Compatible with most notebooks providing a USB connector and utilizing Microsoft Windows Operating Systems
  • Regulatory approval including GCF, PTCRB, FCC, CE, RoHS and R&TTE
  • Solomon Mobility Manager (Connections Manager and SMS centre)
  • GPRS Multi-slot Class 12, Mobile station Class B. Support PBC CH
  • EGPRS Multi-slot Class 12, coding MCS 1-9 up to 236.8Kbps. Mobile station class B
  • Supports USB 2.0 full speed (12Mbit/s) slave interface
  • Operting Systems Microsoft Windows Operating Systems ( Window 2000/XP Home/XP Pro/Vista )

its the last bit that Ive just realised ( operating system Microsoft windows systems ) that I think is going to be a problem for me , as I am about to become a switcher from PC to Apple Mac, so I am now wondering what to do next , if most USB EDGE modems are for Windows o/s , ?. does this mean that If I can't find an USB EDGE modem with an external antenna conection for use on Mac's , would any EDGE enabled mobile phones ( if I can find one with an external antenna conection ) be only for Windows o/s operation..? :o

Thanks

Thanks LivinLOS, I think may be the GSM car kit uses the same principle as the rap around cup holder type connection

this I think would be ok if you were moving around in your car , but as I live in a poor static signal area , I think the direct

plug into the phone / USB modem may give a better all round signal reception ..? and now there's the Apple Mac

thing to consider..?

Almost all the Sony_Ericsson models have a jack for an external antenna in the back of the phone. Just look for a model with EDGE and you are set.

I am using an S-E K790i, works fine.

Well after looking at Two large IT mall's, I found the SonyEricsson K790i at a JayMart shop, priced new at 9,400 Baht

I asked the sales assistant about buying a separate lead that I could connect my external antenna to and then plug the lead into the phone itself , the sales assistant, who seemed to know about what I was asking for said that I could but a separate lead made by Sony ( part No. HCE - 12 ) but this lead was designed to only connect an external antenna to a separate rap around cup holder type connection , and not to directly plug into the mobile phone. So it seems the sales assistant was saying that with the SonyEricsson K790i you cannot plug an external antenna cable directly into the phone..? can any confrim this please..?

Thanks

well yes you can't plug directly, but indirectly via the black connector to the left above it seems.

would that not be good enough? No need to use the carkit as you wanna hook up to your rooftop :o

however did you consider hutch instead? maybe they got better signal & if they just got 'decent' speed will be faster than edge:)

or how about an alternate GSM provider AIS,DTAC/True tried them all???

well I'm sure you did trial already :D

Thanks ..worldfun

Yes Ive tested several other providers , but the problem is the area where my house is , has a very poor signal strength

so the external antenna connection has to be direct into the phone, the simple non EDGE phone I have at the moment has a small socket on its back to take an external antenna connection and with this type of direct external antenna connection It gives a full signal. so I am still looking for an EDGE enabled phone which has an external antenna connection socket on it ( can any one HELP :o )

Thanks

ok then my best hint would be to try the major manufactorers website & see if they you can sort & browse by 'EDGE' & 'RF connector'.

I'll guess not the newest & slimmest models got those connectors since it takes up quite a bit of space...

Can you post a photo how such an connector looks like exactly I'm not sure I've even seen one at least on Sony Ericsson or Nokias?

Posted

Thanks again worldfun,

manufactorers websites , but with no luck up to now, I think the problem may be that the very latest EDGE enabled mobile phones don't have this external antenna connection option, so may be ive got to try and find a phone thats still being sold new, but it a few yeras old in designe. Ive been to several IT Mall's to look through the selection of phones, but I all way's seem to get a blank stair when I ask for this external antenna option :o , I know there's a phone out there some where , but its taking some tracking down.

Thsi is a photo of the back of my current non EDGE phone , showing the external antenna connection plugged directly into the phone.

Thanks

oh doesn't this cable look exactly like the one that fits sony ericsson's k790i & others???

there's also slightly newer k810i or P1i if PDA style is more to your liking - all having the connector on the back (behind an esily removed rubber capsule)...

;-)

Hi worldfun,

Yes the external antenna cable thats shown in the photograph of my current phone does in fact look like the

SonyEricsson K790i cable ( HCE - 12 ) the only difference between my cable and the HCE - 12 cable is, that the

HCE - 12 has to first be plugged into a separate rap around cup holder type connection , and then the K790i

sits in the external antenna cup holder device., where as my cable connects directly into the back of my phone.

Thanks for the tip on the k810i or P1i if PDA, I will have a look , and let you know the outcome. :o

Thanks

worldfun , just an up date .. Ive looked at the SonyEricsson K810i model, and found it does not have the EDGE option ,

ive been told that the SonyEricsson W810i does have the EDGE option, and an external antenna connection, so i'm off to the IT Mall to check this model out. :D fingers crossed as this is turning out to be like a treasure Hunt trying to find any make of Mobile phone , that has the EDGE option and the elusive external antenna connection :o

Posted

treasure hunt indeed - hope it's as much fun & worth it as it seems like :o

you're right k810i did not get the EDGE technology added - sorry :-(

worldfun , your comments and help are very much appreciated , I will not be beaten.. :o , I know out there some where is just the right phone for me .. Thanks again HN

Hotnutts, what's wrong with the SE k790i? I would take your old phone with you when you go look at the new phone and compair the sockets on the back. I would have thought you can plug directly into the back of the SE otherwise what is the point of having the connector? Worth a try I would have thought.

Posted

Hi miniwai , I did go and have a look at the SE k790i , from what I could see theres no external antenna socket on the phone, although Sony do sell an External antenna adapter ( as shown in my previous post , Sony part number HCE - 12 ) this adapter cable is to connect an external antenna to a separate rap around cup holder type connection, and then the phone is sat in the holder, ive tried this type of cup holder before and there's some loss of signal, so really the external antenna connection has to be a direct connection into the phone its self, ive even been in contact with Sony Mobile

and they said they could not tell me which of their mobile phones have the EDGE option and the external antenna connection on one phone :o

I have a Motorola L6 that is not EDGE capable but has the little coax connector under a rubber cap. I am familiar with this being on almost every Motorola I've ever owned, but I just checked our V360 which has EDGE, and I cannot find such a dust cap or connector.

I believe there are a Motorola L72 (candybar style similar to L6) and W510 (a flip-phone) available at Jaymart, each of which is EDGE capable and costs about 6000 THB. You might want to check them, though I cannot confirm whether it has the coax connector or not.

I've always found my Motorolas to be very reliable data modems, even if the phone functions can be a bit quirky (particularly for people who are trained on other brands first)...

Hi Hotnutts, The K790i does have the adaptor on the back of the phone. Promise I'm looking at it right now it's under a little rubber stopper just above the flash. It also has Edge and should be the answer to all your problems. The only thing I'm not sure of is if its the same type of connection your using now but i would have thought so. I'll post pics when i get home on the desktop (on iphone at mo) Hope you get it sorted soon.

FWIW, I have a cheapo Sony Ericsson (J100i) that is about 1.5 years old (not EDGE) and it has what must be that same connector under a small rubber plug ..

.. and, FTI .. the plug was a pain in the a** to get back in, thank you very much! :o
