Public property being targeted by thieves

BANGKOK: -- State agencies are stepping up measures to protect public property from thieves amid increasing concern at the number of thefts across the country.

Nikorn Boonsri, director-general of the Highways Department, said items worth more than 45 million baht had been stolen from roads and highways since 1999 - an average loss of five million baht each year.

In the past, road signs were the usual targets of thieves, but now power lines were increasingly being stolen, particularly on motorways between Bangkok and Chon Buri.

Oh no, another crackdown! That's two at the same time, drugs and theft--how will the police do it. They will have to work overtime. Of course, if they get the drug addicts who are stealing metal they will actually be working efficiently!

Its an international phenomenon now. The price of base metals has soared due to the demand from India and China.

I chant this mantra every time my office phone / fax / email is down. Its nice that some of the local newspapers print photos of some of the thieves that get fried trying to steal live wiring though. Can't cheat Darwin. :D

They ought to string em up from those massive flood lights down the middle of the BKK -> Chonburi road to put people off... 90% of those lights are never switched on, how much did they cost each, 4/5 million baht? :o
