Yes, clubbed RH index finger, top knuckle, its twice the size of my left index finger top knuckle, its been like this for 6 weeks, sometimes painfull, and difficult to bend, web research came up with water retention? How can that be?

My typical day is 3/4 cups of tea in the morning, [im english and no matter how hot the weather is, i love my tea,] then 1/2 pint of milk on cereal, go to farm with 2ltrs of diluted concentrated lime/lemon or orange drink,I leak sweat from every pore in my body im sure, in 3 hours this is finished, so i go home and have an electyolyte drink and a good long shower, then evening meal, after 3/4 chang lights and a drink of milk before bed, I dont drink a lot of water because when it goes off-cold i choke on it, and i only have about 4 pees a day,

Has anybody any other ideas why a clubbed finger can be associated with water retention please, TIA Lickey..

With only one finger involved, it is not water retention nor any other systemic cause. It is a localized problem, possibly tendonitis.

Hot soaks followed by rubbing in an antiinflammtory ointment such as Voltaren, counterpain etc may help, as may aspirin or an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofen etc) -- these latter two both need to be taken with food and should be avoided if there is a history of ulcer or bleeding disorder.

Gentle exercies by lacing the fingers of both hands, placing down in front of you on a table (palms downward) and then liftingup at the wrists also helpful, do often but gently.

Avoid clutching things in that finger, especially avoid carrying those plastic baggies that one gets in the nmarkets etc..these have led toa big increase in the incidence of trigger finger and similiar problems.

If it persists despite such measures and you are in or near Bangkok, the best hand doc in the country is Dr. Panupan who is available at Phayathai 2 Hospital undays 9-11 AM and Chao Phya Hospital Thursday 6-7 PM (rest of the time he is a seniopr professor at Siriraj). Call first to be sure he'll be there as he has a busy travel schedule.

Hi Sheryl, thanks for your reply, mrs dragged to the clinic tonight, and after 1 steriod injection or pain-killing , not sure, and the usual 6 packets of different tablets, he then said, same as you, soak in hot water and try some cream which we dont stock here, we live about 650 ks north of BK but im sure its available in Udon Thani, Thanks again, Lickey,

Naam, my breakfast is a fruit mix, papaya banana raisins and cornflakes with milk, and the evening milk is to calm my tender stomach after a few beers, all this promotes calcium and finger and toenail growth, then the 2 pretty young ladies who work in our salon trim these for me every 2 weeks or so, and they know to be careful of the big one!!

Just about the only condition affecting that joint (and the middle finger next to it) is osteoarthrosis. An X-ray should show typical signs.

This is age related and genetic and may appear from about 45y upwards. Tends to pain on and off but the usual anti-inflammatories help most times. It is chronic but usually not a debilitating problem.

Some people experience an increase in discomfort with acidic foods and drink. (Tomatoes, orange juice etc but not to be confused with gout.)
