I was just wondering what others thought about the meningitis vaccine. We were in Ireland a few months back, on holiday, and during that time my son was due his 4 month vaccinations. I was talked into also allowing him to have the meningitis vaccine too, which he had. Apparently it is now a must in Ireland.

I understand that this vaccine is not routinely given in Thailand and they did not give it to him at six months. I had considered getting it privately, but he was sick with the German measles and we were told to wait. He is now seven months and is sick again with a high fever so we will need to delay again.

I just wondered what others thought about this vaccine? I guess all vaccines come with risks but as he has already had the first dose should we continue? What have other parents done in Thailand?

Are you talking about Prvenar from Wyeth?

Its quite expensive in Thailand I have heard - 20k THB altogether is opne figure I heard

My friend who works in a senior position for a large vaccine company (Not Wyeth) and knows all about risks of vaccines has had her daughter born last September vaccinated with it - she got it cheaper though being in the industry.

If it was me I would go for it (I work in vaccines too though so I have to make that clear)

Hi Prakanong, the vaccine we used in Ireland was called 'Meningitec'. I am not sure what they use in Thailand. It does sound a lot more expensive than what we paid in Ireland, but I certainly won't begrudge the money if it will offer my son some protection.
