Suvarnabhuni, An Architectural Marvel And Internationally Renowned Thai Icon, But!

Featured Replies

Everytime I visit Thailand, I can't help but be impressed with Suvarnabhuni Airport.

Not only an architectural marvel, serving Bangkok's needs well into the future, but indeed a work of art.

Faced with many technical requirements I can see how easy it would be for designers to overlook the simplest things which help make such places human friendly.

Advanced as it is, what happened to the shower facilities? :o

Many travelers, particularly those about to embark on long international flights, might need or want to freshen up, especially after being subjected to Bangkoks' high humidity.

What are your thoughts?

Are there other design defficiencies?

for departing passengers it all seems to work ok , apart from long security lines and inadequate seating provision in the shopping mall.

but arrivals seems to be afflicted with the confusion of clutter that is endemic to every public space in this country.

Compared to Singapore T1. Suvarnabhuni Airport is not even close being a will setout airport. Change it to the domestic and try again.

Neva had a reason to criticize Swampy.

Most airports are claustrophobic rabbit warrens, Swampy's open plan is brilliant.

Free showers if ya eva get to AKL, NZ.............LOL

Swampies functionality is ok as as airports go, not the best not the worst........but wouldnt go as far as saying its an architectural marvel or work of art....always strikes me as what look likes a half finshed industrial project that could be well placed in the Map-tu-phut in the industrial complexes, there also appears to be clash of influnces...ultra-modern design combined with classical Thai influences...IMHO..doesnt quite work..

Would class the birds nest stadium in Bejing a architechural marval/work of art...but couldn't class Swampy in the same catagory, but saying this big improvement over DM airport...which always gave me the impression of being stuck in the 1970's..when it came to design/decor...

I keep waiting for them to finish the terminal. You know, plants or *something* with color. The usual comparison with Singapore's Changi: loads of plants and blooming orchids everywhere. I've given up any hope that the acoustics can be improved. Count the colors in this pic other than various shades of grey:

What always gets me about Suvarnabhumi is the amazing lack of professionalism when it comes to the small things like signs and such. Everything has a hastily thrown together sheen to it such as the photocopied pieces of paper taped to walls showing people where things are. The grime on the windows and the stupid barely coherent repeating voice on the moving walk. It doesn't take an awful lot of effort to go run off a basic professional looking sign for under 500 baht or fix these small things but management is apparently nonexistant.

The airport itself isn't that awful. Personally, I think the Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports are far worse aesthetically and infrastructure wise but they do make up for it with true world class duty free.

Been to old airport 3 times, swampy 5 trips. Swampy just doesn't look Thai. Too modern and sterile. If one were transported there like in Star Trek, one would have to look very hard to determine one was in Thailand. No architecture or Thai styles are evident. Functionally, the long walks to terminals past rows and rows of redundant overpriced shops is too much.

The gate waiting areas might have the worst acoustics I have ever seen. Can't understand a darn thing.

Mass transport wise it is pretty good. Buses to/from pattaya throughout the day, and buses to/from many parts of bangkok and to spots near the skytrain stops (ekami) for instance are ok. Taxis are ok.

All in all I don't mind the place.
