Thailand is the least peaceful country in Asia except for Burma according to the GPI.

The GPI (Global Peace Index) (http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi/results/rankings.php), which has just been updated with 2008 figures, attempts to rank countries on their general lack of violence. Iceland is highest on the list with, not surprisingly, Iraq and Somalia crawling along the bottom.

In Asia, Japan is highest, at number 5 (out of 140 countries), then Hong Kong (23) and Singapore (29).

Thailand is 118 out of 140. It is ranked below Congo, South Africa, Iran, Angola, Cambodia and Rwanda to name but a few.

The ranking is determined by many indicators "which combine internal and external factors ranging from a nation's level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbouring countries and the level of respect for human rights. These indicators were selected by an international panel of academics, business people, philanthropists and peace institutions. The GPI is collated and calculated by the Economist Intelligence Unit."

Yes, Thailand fares particularely bad when it comes to Homocides, Violent Crime, Human Rights, Terrorist Acts.

But 3 points I disagree with this study:

1- UN Deployments 2006-07 (percentage of total forces) 5 (1 best, 5 worst) : Thailand is not deploying Peace Troops anywhere in the world, like Switzerland. Therefore they both are considered extremely unpeaceful... Irony ? :o

2- Relations with neighbouring countries

Qualitative assessment of relations with neighbouring countries. Ranked 1-5 (very low-very high) by EIU analysts 2

Does Thailand really have that great relations with Burma, Malaysia, Cambodia & Laos ? Of course, there's business as usual and Samak doesn't see the slightest problems with the burmese situation at the moment... but generally ?

3 - Estimated number of deaths from organised conflict (external) 1

UCDP defines conflict as: "a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths in a year"

The best mark for Thailand ? What about their north-western border to Burma ? What about Southern Thailand ?

The same of course goes to

Number of external and internal conflicts fought: 2000-05 2

UCDP defines conflict as: "a contested incompatibility that concerns government and/or

territory where the use of armed force between two parties, of which at least one is the government of a state, results in at least 25 battle-related deaths in a year"

Apologies for disturbing your tranquil mental state. I was just presenting information that is in the news in other countries and I thought some people might find interesting.

The GPI (Global Peace Index) (http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi/results/rankings.php),

This would be the same index that shows the US as less peaceful than notable stalwarts of brotherly love such as Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, Cambodia, Serbia, Rwanda, Syria, Cuba, Panama and Nicaragua??

This would be the same index that shows Thailand as less peaceful than notable humanitarian wonderlands such as Congo, Uganda, Angola, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, Yemen and Iran????

WHAT UTTER DRIVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just looking through that table comparing the Laos entry (my new home country) and the UK (my old country). It's pretty blatantly obvious who ever has made the rating has been smoking something!

Several point standout:

Level of organised conflict (internal): 2

Likelihood of violent demonstrations: 2

Level of violent crime: 2

Political instability: 2.75

Level of organised conflict (internal): 1

Likelihood of violent demonstrations: 1

Level of violent crime: 1

Political instability: 1

How in gods names can they come up with this figures? So they are saying that the likelyhood of a violent attack is more likely in Laos that the UK!?!?!?!? Also that violent demonstrations are more likely to happen in Laos that the UK, I must of dreamt the G8 demos and the attacks on the Olympic torch bearers amongst many other whilst I've been living in a completely demonstration free Laos.

Obviously 34 years of the Laos Communist rule is instable. . :o

Then this pearler for Laos:

Importance of religion in national life: 2 . . . I must be imagining the throngs in the temples everyday, all the sellers of the flowers every 8th and 15th day and every festival!

Can't comment on the Thailand rating but the Laos being below the UK is ludicrous! The UK you are likely to get attacked and beaten to pulp purely for looking at someone, let alone taking you chance purely walking into town during the day. . :D

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks for the info ade100.

1) I love Thailand, have family there and it is indeed my favorite playground. But that's it just a place to play.

2) There is no place for the truth here about Land Of Smiles, especially

if it contains facts as those your post refered to.

You will never be popular on TV if you speak the truth about the Land of

Smiles. We all do want to be popular. Don't we?

So better to be quiet and maybe become popular.

There is an old saying about "Blissfull Idiots".. :D

What are the chances of being robbed by bandits in Laos?

Or of being blown up by exploded ordnance?

As said previously very very slim.

There hasn't been a 'Hmong' attack on a tourist bus since 2000 there has been none since . . .

As for UNexploded (getting blown up by already exploded is impossible :o) Ordance what has that got to do with a peace index? Also UXO is only an problem in the North East and a large percentage has been cleared . . . tourists have no problems . . . . well unless they decided to go digging in unploughed land, most of the UXO in Laos is cluster bomb bomblets NOT landmines so just walking on them doesn't cause them to detonant.
