Hello! I am an American staying in Thailand on a tourist visa. My visa expires on May 29th and I wish to get a 30 day extension. However, I am busy during the week and apparently the Immigration Bureau office is closed on the weekends. The Airport Immigration website says foreigners can apply for an extension of stay at Suvarnabhumi, but it doesn't give any details. Would I be able to apply for an extension there on a Saturday or Sunday? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

What is the website for that Immigration office? I have never seen any mention of any such site here. There is an immigration office inside the hotel but they would be open normal weekday hours.

http://sbia.immigration.go.th/

It gives very little information, but one of the bullet points on the front page says, "You could apply an extention stay or a re-entry permit at Suvarnabhumi Airport "

Thanks for the link - looks like mostly just a place holder for now. I am sure you can obtain at the hotel office but do not believe there is any facility inside the terminal building (except the re-entry permit desk after you check-in for flight). But have never made a visit there so if anyone knows otherwise please advise.

That website looks a little funny to me and I wonder who is behind it. The URL indicates that it is a subdomain of the official website of the Immigration Bureau, but look at the email address given at the bottom: dreamteam_imm2[at]yahoo.com.

I would not recommend this site as a reliable source for information on immigration matters, at least not for now.

That reference to the related website is intriguing? I wonder what it signifies.

For what it's worth, the official Immigration Bureau links to that site under the "checkpoints" section. Still doesn't make it any more helpful tho...

Thanks everyone for the responses. Sounds like I may just have to bite the bullet and get on the phone. Appreciate the help!

Just additional information depending on which whois you use.

As regards to the domain http://sbia.immigration.go.th/ they must know about it because you cant register a separate DNS for the sub domain.

On that subject it does amuse me in Thailand just how many high profile businesses such as spotted here that have a fully working domain name still choose the use free Hotmail and Yahoo addresses.

Anyway a bit off topic and congrats on the new Mini-Maestro :o

I agree that there is something funky about this site. The flash header says "Wecome to nai.immigration.co.th - National Airport Immigration Division" but the actual working URL is sbia.immigration.go.th.

It it a Subdomain, Thai Immigration owns the Top level Domain of immigration.go.th so they have to know about sbia.immigration.go.th to enable it to work.

Most Thai sites don't work anyway so I don't see why this should be any different just because it's a sub domain to the Immigration website.

For some strange reason I am wondering whether perhaps the person shown as the registrant of visathailand.com might perhaps be operating and managing the websites of the subdomain sbia.immigration.go.th and the website visathailand.com. Going to visathailand.com does not, as the opening screen would lead one to expect, bring me to a website offering legal services but to what appears to be a forum in Thai language.

I am wondering whether this registrant, Suphat Skonchai, apparently a lawyer, perhaps made a deal with a person at the immigration office to operate subdomains of immigration.go.th for personal gain, with this gain possibly shared with the person at immigration who gave him this permission. With personal gain I mean income from the advertising links on the subdomain sbia.immigration.co.th and perhaps also some other subdomains like nai.immigration.go.th

I feel a little bad about being so suspicious but I just can’t help thinking that the Immigration Bureau would not set up these two subdomains and perhaps other subdomains of which I have no knowledge.

100% Possible Maestro and I wouldn't put it past them at all. As you know in life there is usually no smoke without fire.

It's 100% possible that some guy was trusted to do some work etc on immigration.go.th which would give him a lease to open whatever he liked such as Maestro.immigration.go.th and unless anyone noticed anything he could make a fortune from Pay Per Click links by adding Sub Domains and letting Google etc index them.

I wouldn't feel bad about being so suspicious because its 100% possible and we all know what goes on over here LOL.

Your probably right unless it's another case of the right hand never knowing what the left hand is doing :-)

To answer your REAL question: NO - you cannot use the Airport Immigration office at Suvarnabhumi unless you are holding a BOARDING PASS (and those are only issued on the day of departure). And I beleive the service there is limited to re-entry permits only - not extension of stays. I tried to use them recently (February) on a return trip when I knew I would need a mulit-entry for my next trip and was told about the restrictions at that time.

I did hear that there is an Immigration Office somewhere near the airport but will leave that to those who may know. You can always -- always -- call the BKK immigration hotline! I finally did this year, at the urging for friends, and was astounded at just how friendly, helpful and understanding (of English) they were! The number is on the immigration website.

You are incorrect about weekends!! The BKK Immigraiton office (Soi Suanplu) is open on Saturday mornings! It's about the best time to go there as there are many fewer people (the earlier the better).

I continue to be amazed at the improvements in the Thai immigration system (seriously). I have been here over 5 years and we have gone from sytems like those in 1950s to those almost in 2008 in the West.

PS - And you might be careful about saying your 'busy during the week" to immigration officials ... not a good excuse from a tourist.

Good luck.

Ask for a visa run to Cambodia at any travel agency in Bangkok. Good luck !

hello;

IS this 100% correct?

I am retruning to thailand on june 6th and then will be heading out on june 8th to Cambodia. I hold a 1 year extension.

SO i can get my re-entry permit ONLY after i get my bording pass???

Where is the office located? do i merley check in , get my bording pass then go to immigration? I would really hate to lose my extension as have had it for the past 6 years.

Thanks

There are two options at airport - there is a full service immigration office located inside the hotel for normal workday visa extensions of stay and such. There is a re-entry only permit desk located in the outgoing immigration area after flight check-in. You must have photos with you as there is no camera there so allow extra time after flight check-in. Or get the re-entry permit early at any full service Immigration office during work hours. If done in Bangkok Hqs you can email application and paperwork will be ready when you visit to limit waiting time.
