How Can I Update My Frontpage Created Web-site Without Using Frontpage

Featured Replies

Years ago I created our web-site with FrontPage under Win98 and used this to update as needed.

Now our Win98 PC (10 years old) has finally quit and I do not have FrontPage on any of our XP PCs.

As I recall from what I read long ago a web-site created and up-loaded using FrontPage can not be modified/uploaded outside of FrontPage (the entire site won't work any more). Is this correct?

I can add files to our web-site and upload them with WS FTP but can't integrate them into the web-site.

Is there any free program around that can read and allow me to modify pages (I have all original FP created pages on HDD) and upload them without me having to re-do the entire web-site?

Please do not tell me it was a mistake to use FP in the first place. I know by now that it was. I'm just trying to migrate to something else without having to re-do everything.

Thanks for any help.

Google for Kompozer. But really you can use any text editor, and if you want to preview the page install WAMP on your local machine.

Yes you are correct, but my knowledge of html is close to null (I can read and understand it but can't come up with my own syntax needed to add code).

My main point here is that the site was created with FrontPage which results in many additional files used for the proper operation of the site.

Some years ago I edited one page of our site using MS word and uploaded it with WS FTP. The page was there but no longer integrated with the main site because FP creates its own reference and link files.

Frontpage has now been superceded by Expression Web which is part of MS's Expression Studio umbrella. You can download a trial from

http://www.microsoft.com/expression/try-it/default.aspx

I would watch a few webcasts or read a book on it first.

Cheers.

Years ago I created our web-site with FrontPage under Win98 and used this to update as needed.

The only thing you need is the FrontPage extensions for your new web server, but only if you used any of these in your old web site i.e. counters, substituted pages, images etc. You can use just about any html editing software to edit your old site, although I must admit FrontPage 2003 is my preferred editor of choice still today.

If your new box / web server is windows based and uses a windows httpd or even apache for that matter, simply install the FrontPage extensions (search the MS web site for them - free to dload) and copy over your old web site to the new server and you are in business.

Good luck.

How big/complicated is your site?

Are you using some special features/effects?

As a long term solution, I'd recommend to recreate your site using HTML editors. It should not be too complicated...

You may PM me for a practical advice.

Due to forum rules I can't post my url but if you use my TV name, add a triple w in front and and .com at the end you'll get it.

Our site is quite static but occasionally I have to add or remove listed items.

Recently I did an update on one page using Notepad and this page lost the links to other pages.

After re-uploading the old page without the updates all was OK.

Does FrontPage (97) keep track of all changes and reject any changes made outside of FP?
