This request is part of an inquiry into whether Vonnarat, a defendant in a high-profile fraud case, was granted special privileges while undergoing medical care. On 29th May, an NHRC insider confirmed sending a letter to the hospital’s chief medical officer. The commission seeks information on the care Vonnarat received, particularly concerned by reports that he was accommodated in a high-level private room on the hospital's 14th floor—a claim raising questions about fairness in treatment procedures for detainees. The backdrop of this probe is the major Stark Corporation scandal. In 2023, revelations of accounting fraud and embezzlement surfaced, with damages pegged at an estimated 14.7 billion baht. The scandal adversely affected at least 4,000 investors, and its cable-manufacturing arm, Phelps Dodge International (Thailand) Ltd, alone reported 12 billion baht in damages from over 200 dubious transactions carried out between 2021 and 2022. Additional irregularities accounting for 3.6 billion baht were uncovered within other Stark business units. Following an investigation, police issued arrest warrants for Vonnarat and other Stark executives, charging them with manipulating financial documents, misleading investment stakeholders, and inflicting substantial economic damage on Thailand's stock market. Vonnarat was captured by the Department of Special Investigation at a Bangkok hospital on 10th February last year. Following this, he was charged by the Office of the Attorney General but was denied bail by the Criminal Court, resulting in his transfer to Bangkok Remand Prison. While held, Vonnarat faced several health complications, including a painful groin inflammation. He initially sought treatment at Corrections Hospital on 13th February 2024 before being transferred to Police General Hospital for necessary surgical intervention. The NHRC’s investigation aims to rectify potential disparities and ensure that all detainees receive equitable treatment regardless of their status. While the hospital has reportedly cooperated, the commission indicates that key aspects of Vonnarat's alleged special treatment remain unanswered. She's right... She told the taxi driver not to take the toll way and he did... His fault. Whenever I get in a Taxi, a GRAB, a BOLT etc... I always tell the taxi driver which route to take - thats because: a) I've lived here and been driving in Bangkok probably longer than most taxi drivers have. b) I know the short cuts and where traffic is worse. c) I can also see the area's of congestion on Google Map. Once I had the taxi driver disagree with me, he wanted to take a route that I know would be heavier traffic. We hadn't moved off by that point, so I simply got out. -
