I know I should have gone Friday but just didn't have the time. Now I've managed to establish that immigrations opening and closing times are 8:30am-16:30pm so if I turned up at 4pm do you think I will have any problems getting the 30 day extension time wise? (only 30 minutes before closing I mean). I'm going Monday anywy but anyone know if i'' get fined because the visa expires on the 1st June (tomorrow) but imm are closed on weekends.

Whether you will be fined or not will be at the discretion of the immigration officer. You seem to be talking about an extension of a tourist visa stay and you could have applied for this days or weeks early without losing anything: the 30 days are always added to your current period of permission to stay.

I have done this before the process takes 30 minutes tops. Applying weeks in advance you would be granted the extension there and then I suppose but I would imagine you would lose some time off your tourist visa. This is just the first time it's fallen on a Sunday. I usually just go on the exact day of visa expiry and get the extension of 30 days that your elibible for after your tourist visa has expired.

You do not loose anything by going early.

as already written, up to the discretion of the officer at Suan Plu very likely, cause it's up to you to look after your visa!

on the 2nd you simply have overstayed by one day, no matter if it was a sunday!

They expect the applicant shows up BEFORE the expiry date... what if it expires some extended long weekend, like the one 17,18,19th?

Your visa expired on Saturday. Immigration is open Saturdays and you could have sorted your extension out, so you will be fined for the overstay.

Had your visa expired on Sunday, you would (most likely) not have been fined.

You will probably not have a problem to receive an extension even if you do not get to Immigration before 4 PM on Monday.

To show them that you truly are sorry for having messed up, showing up a few hours before closing time might be a good idea, IMHO.

Just like anyone else, the staff at Immigration likes to finish work and go home on time. If, e.g., you got caught up in traffic, did not make it until 4.15 PM, therefore make someone have to stay on longer - they might just get into the mood to not grant you the 30 days. Very unlikely, me thinks. But always better to stay on the safe side. :o

Good luck!

Samuian: "They expect the applicant shows up BEFORE the expiry date... what if it expires some extended long weekend, like the one 17,18,19th?"

Let us assume Immigration is closed on the 17th, 18th, and 19th.

If your visa expires on the 16th and they are open on the 16th, you will have to pay for overstay for 17th, 18th and 19th. If your visa expires on the 17th, 18th, or 19th, you will NOT have to pay for overstay, as long as you go and apply for your extension the very first day Immigration is open again (after the long weekend).

Where does this nonsense information come from? It's no problem to extend on the date of expiry. I even

experienced leniency even after being three days late ... (but this doesn't hold a guarantee).

===============================================================

IMHO more incorrect information .... Saturday mornings are long gone ......

From Stickman this week:

There seems to be a trick at the Immigration Department in avoiding long waits and long queues. Go there towards the end of the day. Never ever go on a Monday, and it's probably also best to avoid Fridays. Immigration is open until 4:30 PM and it would appear the best time to venture there is the hour before closing. The Immigration Department is reluctant to hold passports overnight so even someone entering at 4:15 should get whatever they need done that day, without the need to wait too long.

What a silly reply,

Of course "They expect the applicant shows up BEFORE the expiry date" because thats what the date stamp is for and thats what the law says.

I know that you CAN extend it on the day of expiry but you should be adult enough to read a calender and decide if they will be closed on that date or not. As a Tourist you can't really say "Oh I'm sorry, I was at work!"

" I even experienced leniency even after being three days late " Well thats just taking the piss because they told you when your stay expires and you turn up 2 to 3 days late. Thats just dumb to be doing stuff like that and risk getting arrested even if you get arrested because someone runs you over and the Police are called, your still on overstay.

I have been asking for a while if IMM is still open on a Saturday but can't seem to find an answer without going there next Saturday just to have a look which I'm not that bored to do.

I've made this mistake once in 25 years in Thailand by remember the date wrong. It happens just like people

do get sick or get run over and are on overstay involuntarily.

Sorry, this is wrong. I extended my tourist visa a week ago Saturday. Got there a few minutes before 8:30 and I was out of there 15 minutes later. I think extensions are the only things they do Saturday mornings.

I've seen lengthy, repeated explanations from those I'll call the "Wise Men" of this site.

Does the`poster know the difference between a tourist visa and a 30 day entry permit. The entry permit is given upon arrival into the Kingdom, good for 30 days. When one goes to immigration, the extensions are for only 7 days. No exeptions.

The OP, although 'too busy' to take care of such important stuff as staying legal and avoiding fines in a timely manner, only refers to a having a visa and says he has 'done this before' so doubt that he is trying to do the impossible of asking for 30-days on a 28-day 'permit to stay' stamp on arrival. However, anyone leaving things to the last minute is a plonker. I reckon when he does leave, he will be the "last remaining passenger" type that they will be paging at great inconvenience to his fellow flyers, because he fancied a quick beer and a shag before getting the taxi.

However, the slanging match mid-thread regard are they open? are they closed? do you know the law? made me laugh. Nothing better than someone with 'fresh' proof, especially from a Newbie, shutting down those who pontificate from behind their keyboards, citing years old, third-hand or anecdotal evidence in their 'experienced' reasoning.

I mean, quoting Stickman as a font of knowledge?

Yes but why go to all the trouble of going to immigration when it is so much easier to just ask on here?

Plus on here you can get 50-60 different answers.

Wrong. Go for extension BEFORE your permit expires & any long weekend happens. Buy a clue & make a plan.

I can't understand why you have to be so rude, Immigration IS open on a Saturday morning.

You also failed to quote me saying "I know that you CAN extend it on the day of expiry but you should be adult enough to read a calender and decide if they will be closed on that date or not"

So where your rudeness about opening law books and calling me Mr. Lawyer and Mr. EmptyHead comes from is just uncalled for, childish and rude.

Maybe your 25 years in Thailand has been just a few years too long.

I do agree that it is a good idea to sort out your extension before your visa (or entry permit) expires.

But whether you feel one should "buy a clue & make a plan" or not: my information is NOT wrong.

If you do not believe me: please call Immigration and ask them to verify it.

Seems even internet idiots manage to reach the far ends of the world. All is lost.

appologies if this has allready been said but i have been in the same situation as OP and after reading the 1st few replies i thought i would make sure you get a positive answer...

i was also worried arround christmas time about the same situation, the place was closed and i couldnt extend my visa, upon arriving monday when it was open again i was immediatly told by the shops over the road when i asked that it is fine because my visa expired when the place was closed. The opening hours that i found at the time said it was closed saturday and sunday im not sure if they were incorrect or have changed since then but at the time my visa expired on the saturday i belive and i went on the monday and it wasnt even mentioned when i went trough the process of extension.

also when i got one at christmas the only extension to a 30 day tourist visa you could get was 7 days. with a maximum of 1 extension. Unless their are special circumstances i think the most you can stay in the Kingdom on a Tourist Visa on Arrival is 1 Month + 7 Day extension.

As its monday now im sure you allready know this but for other people wanting to know i hope this helps. Feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

Dotcom provides the right anwer .... extend it before it expires. That's what is in the law.

BTW Why are we still answering the OP? This issue was last week and has been solved by the

As for flaming, No I didn't.

I just reacted to you saying that "They expect the applicant shows up BEFORE the expiry date" was as you called it "nonsense information" because you can't extend it AFTER the expiry date unless they are lenient with you. That's why it has a date.

Also suggesting that people are OK to extend their stay 2 or 3 days after the Expiry date is reckless because that would put people on overstay.

I don't know why your post followed calling me Mr.Lawyer , Mr.EmptyHead , telling me to "watch the traffic" and now telling me to "get a life" !

There is no need to be rude if people don't agree with you or have a different aspect on any matter.

BTW, Its a Forum, Not Questions And Answers. Other people are allowed to post stuff even after a question was answered.

I read the rules and I'm not going to argue the point with you. This is not what ThaiVisa is for. However when you lower yourself to name calling then of course I'm going to react.

You do not loose anything by going early.

It's a good idea to go a week early. This would allow some "breathing room" in the case the extension was not granted.
