Do you have a bit of time on your hand here is a place that needs help in so many ways. Called Pakkred Babies home on ChangWattana.

For the last 3 years I have been going to this Babies home for childern left at the hospitals and such. They range in new borns up to the age of 5 years. I bring what I can which never seems to be enought but I hope it helps and give my time as well. There are some links in Google

if one does a search under Pakkred Babies home. Under the alternate spelling of Pakkret Babies home you will also find a few links.

It always seems to be overwhelming and you will understand if you do visit. The ladies who take care of all the kids always seem tired but you would be too if you were in charge of 300 or so babies who all have different sleep patterns and all want some attention.

Some of the things I bring are as follows. Diapers meduim and large and I was bringing newborn diapers but the home perfers cloth ones which makes sense now that I think about it. Baby Formula also and it never seems to be enought.

No time then just drop by and give some Thai baht it will help and they will give you receipt. Its really all up to you. I know there are many different places that do this. I just wanted you all to know about the Pakkred Babies home.

Give a moment it will last a lifetime. Be it at the Pakkred Home or elsewhere.

my 2 cents...

I sent an email TWICE to volunteer my services to help out as I am retired and wanted something to do. but I never got a response. my guess is - the charity groups in bangkok only want young female volunteers. so, my suggestion to you is - PLEASE post that you ONLY want young female volunteers so people like me don't waste our time contacting these "charity agencies". thank you.

Why would I post that when I am not young or female? The Pakkred home has never given me that impression. Its not a charity its a home with many babies that are looking for some interaction some help. Are you even talking about the pakkred Baby home which is what I was talking about? Please do not assume and generalize.

A map and directions in English and Thai that one would be able to hand a Taxi driver, if needed, would be very useful. Thanks for the info Minburi.

Here is some info that will help and I am working on a map as we speak. It is not easy to find. But to narrow it down it is on the same side as the Carrefour Changwattana where I buy most of my items for the home and about 10 minutes further west.

Pakkret Babies Home Volunteer Project

During the seventies, a group of expatriate ladies decided to do something useful with their spare time and together with a charity organization started Pakkred Babies' Home Volunteers Project.

At one time the Home had the minimum number of staff required to look after each room/building, especially in the newborn to one and a half age group. Often one baby had a bottle to suck on in it's mouth for hours on end supported by only a blanket. Rarely did these babies feel or see light.

This is where the volunteers try to make a difference. Volunteers are usually assigned one child who they then see on a regular basis. This can be one or more days a week, it depends how much time you have to spare. When there are more volunteers, more babies receive individual attention and establish a mother/child relationship.

A child who early in their development is brought into contact with a foreign face, foreign food supplements and language, has a better chance in settling down with adoptive parents. It makes it much easier for a child to be integrated into a family when they have had individual care. The project is well supported by the Superintendent and the staff of Pakkred Babies' Home.

Pakkret Babies' Home is located at:

78/1 Moo 1,Thivanon Road, Bangtalad, Pakkred, Nontaburi,Thailand

Transportation

The Volunteers have a generous sponsor (INVE) who provides transportation from Sukhumvit (downtown) to Pakkred Babies' Home and back. At the moment a minibus runs every Tuesday and Thursday (except Bank Holidays). With a minimum of 4 volunteers the bus can run on other weekdays. It leaves from Krung Thai Bank Head Office parking lot on Sukhumvit Road between Soi 1 and Soi 3 at about 8.10 - 8.15am and returns at approx. 11.30 -11.45am.

You can also visit the Home if you have your own transport, but please make sure that this is at times suitable for the Home.

Who Do I Contact?

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact:

Wilma Ratanaruka or Khun Som in the office

Tel: 023002183 (afternoons)

More to come( I hope) :o

yeah. you are right. I keep forgeting that english is not the main language here. stupid me. if they still have that free van going out there, maybe I'll go and check the place out. if they need someone to help them with computers, I wouldn't mind volunteering at least 2 hours of my time each day. I got plenty of free time. just play computer games, watch tv, and surf the net.

a suggestion.. if they had a paypal donation link on their website, it would make it very easy for lazy people like me to contribute to their organization without doing email or physically taking the van ride out there to assist. you could even provide a receipt for tax purposes. people all over the world would try to help out, I'm sure. a few dollars here and there.. no big deal for most people. once the word got out... providing some sort of weekly update status of each of the kids online could bring in a lot of contributions to help out.

minburi is coreect, these kids need as much help as they can get HOWEVER, the address given by Minburi is not correct, the unit is located on Tiwanon Rd not Chaeng Wattana

From viphavadi rangsit enter into Chaeng wattana Road, continue ove the two new fly overs until you see carrefoure on your left. As you pass Carrefoure come into the left lane and at the traffic lights turn left. This is Tiwanon, the orphanage is on the left hand side

Reviving this thread... I'm wondering if anything has changed with this organization? E.g., do they still run their shuttle? Are they still looking for people to spend time with the babies? Does anybody know whether they allow teenagers to help out? My daughter is 14 and will hopefully attend school in BKK next year so I can join my husband there. How is help from men regarded? My husband is fantastic with small kids, and we might be interested in coming in as a family... thanks for any insight!

I am sure that the Babies Home will allow teenagers to help out with the children. The University close by has a big brother and big sister volunteer program so the children have contact with teens. Our son was adopted from this Babies Home and he had a big brother that would visit him and go out on excursions.
