If you are willing to splash out a bit for some really great Indian food then the Rang Mahal at the Rembrandt Hotel (Sukhumivit Soi 18 Bangkok) is fabulous.

Not your red hot curry house post night on the beers experience - rather really very good Indian food.

For the best Curry on the Planet.

Adil's Balti House, Sparkbrook, Birmingham - This is the restaurant that brought Balti to the UK and is a real experience.

Avoid Royal India in the semi-food court of Paragon (behind MOS burger). Pricey, poor quality and bad stomach afterwards.

I need to try Indus and Red...have a feeling I'll be paying a fortune though.

Had the best Indian food in the Indian quarter of Singapore (as I should).

The Taj (Raj?) opposite xyzte disco on 3rd road............do sit in and takeaways...............although not cheap.........figure on 250 baht and up for main course , rice and add on's extra.

The Fisherman's Rest on the road around Lake Mabprachan.

They have a couple of Pakistanis in the Indian kitchen, built a proper tandor oven, they even have mutton on the menu. The only complaint I have heard was from an English gentleman who said it was TOO INDIAN :D:D:o

Try Indian Kitchen in Jomtien. If you are heading into Jomtien, it will be on your right, a hundred meters or so before the arch. Heading towards Pattaya, after the arch on your left. Small restaurant, very tasty, reasonably priced.

In Chiang Mai I have tried several Indian restaurants and not impressed.

The last time I went about a year ago, the vindaloo turned into an intheloo after I returned home.

Can anyone recommend a decent Indian restaurant in Chiang Mai?

This is your first post ever on Thaivisa, and you "incidentally" endorse a pizza, complete with contact details and "rubbish" website?

I'm sure that you're in no way connected with them at all.

I am not aware of Indian restaurants in that area, but if you like it HOT, ask for "phaal" (also spelled "phall") curry.

If you like to cook, try this (my very own) recipe:

PHAAL CURRY

Phaal Curry Powder

¾ c Chili Flakes (hottest)

2 T Fennel seeds

2 T Cumin seeds

2 T Green Cardamom pods

2 T Peppercorns, whole

1 T Coriander seeds

1 T Fenugreek leaves (Methi), dried

2 ts Black Cumin seeds

2 ts Cloves, whole

1½ ts Cinnamon powder

Lightly toast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, black cumin seeds and whole cloves separately in a dry skillet. Grind all ingredients to a powder.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Ingredients:

1 lb. Chicken Thighs, boneless, cut into medallions

---------------------------------------------------------------

2½ T Phaal Curry powder (above)

¾ ts Salt, or to taste

2 T Mustard Oil

20-25 Bird Chilies, halved (½-cup)

1 med Onion, minced

4 clv Garlic, minced

¾ in Ginger, minced

2 med Plum Tomatoes, diced

¼ c Mint leaves (or Cilantro)

Preparation:

Marinate chicken in phaal curry powder and salt for 1-hour.

Heat mustard oil on medium-high heat in a heavy skillet, and then add the chilies. Sauté for 1-minute then remove with slotted spoon and set aside.

Fry the onions, garlic and ginger in the same oil until the aromas are released, and then add the chicken. Sauté on medium-high heat for 3-minutes, then add the tomatoes. Reduce flame to low heat, cover and simmer 15-minutes, or until chicken is done, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, and then add the mint leaves (or cilantro) and the chilies and stir.

Serve this "dry" curry with basmati rice and/or your choice of Indian flatbread. Be sure to keep an adequate supply of lassi (an Indian yogurt drink) or ice water nearby!

Note: Look for methi (fenugreek leaves) and mustard oil in an Indian market. If you cannot find mustard oil, just use vegetable or coconut oil, but it wont be quite as aromatic. Also note that mustard oil is nearly as healthful as olive oil and adds a unique spicy flavor.

Hope this helps.
