We heard all the Thai customs how the feet are the lowest part of the body.

We are told never to step over anyone.

We are told never to use the foot to point.

We are told a simple innocent foot pointed at someone will cause injury to their soul.

As it is of the gravest insults known to man.

But, then at the mall we see dozens of fat falangs with their socks off, having intimate rub jobs by Thai foot massagers.

What's wrong with this picture?

Maybe the workers who massage feet know it’s the biggest load of crap?

there's no happy ending.... :o

It’s really because they have made the motion 1st to get you ready for a foot massage. It there job. Thai massage is there culture. You still can not make gestures with you feet to them. Then they will get insulted.

"intimate rub jobs by Thai foot massagers." Really? How intimate? I thought they only did feet. What's the difference between tradidtional massage & ancient massage by the way, as long as we are on the subject. Let's hear from the experts out there.

I was once in a crowded van going from Penang to Hat Yai when some backpackers decided to remove their boots. I'll never forget that what an awful stench that was, made the trip hel_l.

There are situations in Thai customs where it is appropriate to touch the feet - Massages, doctors etc.

What about the other end of the spectrum - The Head?

If there weren't situations where it was considered appropriate to touch another persons head how would all the barbers and hair salons survive?

Leaving your shoes outside the house denotes leaving the outside world behind.

It is also a good way of keeping the dirt out.

At one house I know there is even a small trough of water outside the door

so you can wash the dirt of your feet before entering. :o

I always considered stepping over someone or pointing at something with my foot to be quite rude in England.

I remember being told once about the head being the highest part of the body and the feet lowest so I should never put my foot to the head of Thai. Funnily enough, I never put my foot to the head of an Englishman either. :o

I read a post on here the other month about a guy saying when he come to Thailand he didn't know about this uniquely Thai custom, and when sitting in a bar he was asked by a stranger the direction to a toilet he pointed the way with his foot, much to the surrounding Thai's shock and horror. They actually had to tell him this was rude behaviour. :D

I have myself been wondering why it´s always offered foot massage and never hand masage.

I had a good hand massage yesterday.

Offered as a hand massage means something else. :o

I crossed my legs on the BTS once.. My girl, sat opposite, vigourously gestured to me to put my foot down because of someone next to me.. The nearest person next to me was another farang 3 seats away. I suggested to her that he didn't give a shit, but she wouldn't have it.

When it comes to feet ferangs fall way behind on hygene. I wish i had a baht for every green toed ferang i have seen - long dirty nails disguisting. Thais win hands (feet) down!

Any ferangs who doubt this - please take of your socks and observe!

I wear socks and shoes , my feet are clean when i enter , have you ever taken note of the 'Actual' cleanliness of many a Thai house or how 'Clean' your apartment or room is after they have gone through 'The motions 'of cleaning ? Thais appear to understand the action of cleaning but do not appreciate what or if the end result should be , and please do not inspect the toilet !!!! Hygene is not on the agenda , only the supposition , do you shop in local markets and watch the rats scurrying around ?

Shoes and socks in the tropical Thai climate................

well only if you have to go to the office.

I hope you read the previous post about farang feet?? :o

As for your comments on Thai cleaniness, I wonder about the people you mix with?

All the Thais I know are scrupulous about personal and household hygene.

Public areas are another matter............

Simply that it's not the whole picture. Money is going to change hands.

Thai culture can be very flexible.

I think that says more about you and the people you know than it does about farang.

So you have this fixation about studying people's feet? As you are so observant I don't suppose you'd like to tell us just how many Baht your obsession would yield?

Not only the office but to any official appointment (e.g. visa extention), on any construction site (safety boots mandatory) or any evening social gathering (save the weekly p1ss up down town). You and whatsoever may think of your feet as paragons of virtue and cleanliness but others may take offence.

Socks with sandals and/or flip flops are a no-no. Although here in Viet Nam they have socks with a separate "toe" for the big toe so's you can wear them with your flip flops.

Socks should be worn with shoes so as to absorb any sweat and dead skin thus keeping the inside of the shoe relatively clean and odour free. Note that I say "relatively" not "eternally" and this is based on a regular change of socks.
