Work Visa For Part-time Teaching

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if one were to have a part-time English teaching job (weekends/evenings or less than 40 hrs a week) would a work visa/permit be granted?

Thanks! :o

Less than 40 hrs a week, sure. Who wants to teach 40 hrs a week? Evenings and weekends, as far as I know there's no legal reason why not. The real question is though, not would it be granted, but will your employers be bothered.

I personally don't know anyone who works part time with a WP.

I know of a local language center that has 7 classrooms. Apparently they are limited to 7 work permits, one of which probably goes to the DOS. But many of their teachers come and go, and work less than 12 contact hours per week. Maybe a couple of WP's go to teachers who work there at least half time, and have been with them for years. Even if they have a couple of WP's to spare, how would they divide them among the many teachers, and why should they?

thaiwalker, I doubt that you mean '40 hours per week' as contact hours. If you worked 25 contact hours (say, averaging 400 per hour), that would be good income (say, over 36K per month). But lots of part-timers (evenings, weekends) should have a WP at their full time gig.

Certainly in Chiang Mai it's unlikely you'll obtain a wp at a language school. I believe it's easier in Bangkok.
