No sympathy for people who can't handle a dose of the sh1ts. 20,000 baht! They saw you coming mucker.

Some imodium, plenty of water and plenty of rest does the trick and it would probably cost only 20 baht. MUG.

I agree with the advice about consulting a hospital, or a local clinic in these situations.

They can run the tests in less than one hour and have you on the right medicine straightaway.

If the bill was 20,000baht you were definitely stung.

Even one night in hospital with medication should be no more than 2,000baht

a tenth of what you paid.

I speak from experience.

From another MUG, two days in local hospital, one day out and then two more days in BNH..cost my insurance company more than that...I have never ever felt so ill!! or sh-t water for so long!!!!! I've had the runs before but not like that and wouldn't have believed it could be like that if it hadn't happened to me.

I'm not sure what hospital you had your "experience" at, but my bill at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya says I paid 2,200 baht for my room, but part of the bill was over 8,000 baht just for the IV's and medication to stabilize my system. I speak from experience as well. :o

Well, since that was the original advice given to me by my local chemist and the course I first took, perhaps the next time you can crap through a screen for ten days and throw up drinking just water, you should heed your own advice? Thanks for the advice Doctor? :o

Giradia ?

I had giradia when I was 11 years old. I had it for about a year and almost died from it. I was in the hospital every month and the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. I came near to death. I had to stay in the hospital for a month on drip when they figured out what it was. Turns out I may have gotten it from bear shit in the Yuba River in California.

I bet you dont eat bear shit anymore :o:D

roy gsd

Roy, now that was funny. The mental images are priceless.

OP, I know how you feel. I been there and I still have mental problems eating Tacos and Saudage Rolls - 2 seperate incidences that may or may not have been to blame.

Speaking as someone who has experienced amoebic and bacterial dysentry (at the same time - in Nepal) and Giardiasis. I'll give you some advice go down to the local pharmacy and buy the following 500mg Ciprofloxacin, 500mg & 250mg Metronidazole and Buscopan.

Then if you have an onset of severe diarrhea and maybe vomiting (not always included) then first off you should give it a day or two to see if it passes. For these day/s DO NOT take immodium just drink plenty of fluid and eat plain food and hope it passes out. Only take immodium if you NEED to go somewhere or do something - in general however if you have a bacterial or amoebic infection immodium will do nothing.

If nothing changes on the 2nd/3rd (depending on severity) day in the morning take 2 x 500mg Cipro and start taking 1 x Buscopan, 3 times a day.

If by the next morning you feel improvement then take 1 x 500mg and the Buscopan - for most bacterial infections this will clear them up but take another day if you feel the need.

If nothing has changed by the next morning then it's most likely an amoebic infection so take 750mg of Metronidazole 3 times a day for 5 days. 750mg is the recommended dose for Amoebic dysentry - Giardiasis only requires 250mg. Giardiasis is far less of a horrific experience opposed to amoebic dysentry - the main symptom of giardiasis wind - lots of wind - stinky stuff at that! The easiest way to tell the difference is if you don't feel 'that' bad and can get about then it's most likely giardiasis, if all you want to do is curl up in a ball in a bed near to a toilet then it's most likely amoebic dysentry! I can assure you if you ever are unfortunate enough to have full blown amoebic dysentry you will know about it!

The basics are that most stomach problems are bacterial borne and Cipro will put them right - ameobic infections are rarer and more often then not of water borne opposed to food. This said Cipro should be avoided unless necessary as said above try let the bug pass through naturally. Since Cipro clears ALL bacteria in your stomach good and bad afterwards so until your good fighting bacteria re-establishes itself you'll be a bit more sensitive to bad bacteria for a few days.

It goes without say when taking any of these medicines do not drink alcohol - particularly with Metronidazole and for 48 hours after you finish taking it.

Buscopan reduces the stomach cramps and is generally prescribed for people suffering IBS, taking this from day 1 won't hurt.

A few hundred baht is all the medicine here costs - save yourself a stay in a hospital and a large bill! :o Looking through that list of prescribe medicine from the hospital most were to combat your dehydration (headaches - fever). If you'd known the above advice you'd been fine - once the Cipro does it's work the vomiting would stop. If you are dehydrated full fat coke or pepsi allowed to go flat is a far better tasting hydrating fluid than electrolyte powders!

If you go to a pharmacy in Thailand or Laos all they'll do is give you a large bag of many different colour pills and tell you to take them . .. . makes them more money of course! In general they'll just give you immodium stoppers, buscopan, acid reflux stoppers and not antibiotics.

*** Usual disclaimer - if you follow the above advise I will not be responsible for any side effects or problems! I have used the above numberous time and treated several friends and family using the above - ideally though you should have a stool analysed to identify the infection ***

PS. Metronidazole is an antibiotic!

:D

Techno, I also got Amoebic Dysentry from my 3 months in Nepal. I came back about 20lbs lighter, but with a huge swollen tummy. Food passed straight through me and I literally had to wear speedos to give me a bit more of a safety margin when looking for a toliet - when you felt it, you had maybe 60 seconds or she was gonna blow.

I was put in hospital for 2 weeks, but was given very little food by mouth - just drips and lots of antibiotics. My blood was all messed up and it took the doctors a while to figure it all out. They say I probably didnt have too many days left as I was basically getting no nutrition at all and I was severely dehydrated.

Made it to Base Camp, but walked back to Lukla and flew back to Kathmandu then directly to Singapore where I was admitted.

Not a pleasant time at all.

Yep - amoebic dysentry is not something I ever want to experience again! I fortunately got it before I headed out on my trek. I spend about 1 week clinging to either my bed or toilet - I even had hallucinations of strange blue things floating around my head! :o

I really doubt it was the noodle soup. Food poisoning generally takes 24 to 48hrs (or more) before you start to see and feel the effects. Most relate the food poisoning with the last thing that they ate since this is usually the first thing that comes back up. I would suggest thinking back from the time you got sick until approximately three days before what you had to eat. I would be willing to bet that it was something you ate then rather than the noodle soup.

Timing depends on the type of food poisoning and the type bacteria involved. Generally Shellfish food poisoning usually takes somewhere around 3 hours to manifest itself. Again, generally food poisoning is unlikely to take as long as 24 hours and is more likely between 4 to 8 hours.

Phayathai or Samitivej in Sri Racha.

BPH is renowned for its high prices.

9 days of the runs, and you didn't goto the hospital! wow, suprised you've lasted a year here listening to your body that way.

Well, I might have been a bit slow off of the mark, but than the last time I was in the hospital was some 40 years ago, so I maybe a bit stubborn......... along with the fact that I have some Finnish blood in my veins, so as the saying goes, "You call always tell a Finn, you just can't tell him much! :o

As a follow-up to my saga, I've just returned from my follow-up exam at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital and my blood test results show that the bacterial infection is gone but some viral infection remains (thus the continuing headache/fever symptoms). This should all subside within the next two to three days and than it is just the process of getting slowly back up to speed. Thankfully, my appetite is back and I'm like a baboon at a buffet table when approaching the food counter! :D
