Malaysia vows to help Thailand solve southern violence

BANGKOK: -- Visiting Malaysian Foreign Minister Rais Yatim on Wednesday pledged that his government would continue to assist Thailand in solving the continuing violence which has rocked Thailand's Muslim-majority South more than four years, said Thai Deputy Prime Minister/Education Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

Mr Somchai said the assurance was made during his 45-minute meeting with the Malaysian foreign minister who is making a three-day introductory visit to Thailand, beginning Tuesday.

The two neighbouring countries are members of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Thanking Malaysia for being a good neighbour and sharing a common border with Thailand, Mr Somchai said the Thai government's policy is for peace, because if a neighbour has a problem, the countries cannot live in peace.

Some 3,500 persons have been killed in deep southern Thailand by insurgents since renewed violence began in January 2004.

Both men also discussed the ongoing political situation in Thailand in which members and supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has been demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his coalition government for more than a month.

Mr Somchai said he had told Mr. Rais that the demonstration is allowed under the Thai constitution and that he is optimistic that the Thai government would solve the problem.

He said he had also thanked the Malaysian government through Mr Rais for offering 60 scholarships to Thai students to further their studies in Malaysia. --

I think we have heard this before--Malaysia is always going to help out, but somehow the violence continues.

As for Anwar, he's a good guy, unfortunately wherever he goes, he just can't leave his aide's behind!

Is this to divert attention from growing tensions in Malaysia. :o

How many people have died in Malaysia due to those tensions in the last five years?

Yes there are tensions in Malaysia same as Thailand same as most other countries worldwide but at least people aren't dying over them.

(I'll add "yet! :D " to save you the trouble).

A solution has to be found for the troubles in the south preferably through dialogue. It is obvious that the insurgents in the south no longer trust the Bangkok regime therefore an intermediary has to be found and Malaysia is the equally obvious first choice.

I see the are hounding Anwar Ibrahim again. :D

One group trying to hold on to power reaches out to another.

Perhaps their assistance will come in the form of trumped up allegations of sodomy.

Agreed.

We all know that those leaders who plans the strategies are from Malaysia, obviously and most of these Ronda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK), Bersatu and so on are from Malaysian and Indonesian language.

Furthermore, let's not forget that we once had informations and even pictures that these terrorist are training themselves in the forest in Kedah and Perak in Malaysia.

Another insincere claim from the Malaysian government.
